Bright St. Vincent’s boosted their bid to stay in the Men’s Super League with a 99-90 upset over playoff chasing Belfast Star in Glasnevin on Saturday night away from the bright lights of National Cup Finals weekend.
JaRon Thames hit 29-points - including seven of eight from the foul line - as six St.Vincents’ players made it into double-digits and Giorgi Tvalabeishvili had a double-double to help guide his team over the line. It moves the club to 3-11 for the season and one game up on Templeogue in the bid to avoid the drop.
Conor Quinn was a big miss for Star on a night where Darweshi Hunter, De Ondre Jackson and Max Cooper combined for 69 of their 90 points. A fallow scoring period in the second and third quarter ultimately proved their undoing as they dropped to 7-8 for the season and sit in 9th place in the Men’s Super League.
Elsewhere in Men’s Division One there was wins for Ulster University, Joels Dublin Lions and Mater Private Malahide over SETU Waterford Vikings, Tipp Talons and Killarney Cougars respectively.
Curtis Larousse and Nathan Karren took over for UU in their 101-64 victory against Vikings. Larousse topped the boxscore with a 26-point, 13 rebound double-double to help maintain their playoff push in the North Conference of Men’s Division One. They sit in the fourth and final post-season berth currently.
That’s one spot behind Mater Private Malahide, who had a similarly dominant 110-88 success against Killarney Cougars in Kerry. Matthew Harper and Romonn Nelson had 27 points a piece, with a 35 point third quarter for the North Dubliners the difference between the two teams at the buzzer.
Joels Dublin Lions are up to 6th in the North Conference alongside Team North West and Drogheda Wolves, as Aidan Igiehon was dominant in their 102-75 road win against Tipp Talons. The Irish international picked up 15 rebounds, including five on the offensive glass, while Kevin Anyanwu was a perfect 3/3 beyond the arc.
