Donie Greene Memorial Tournament returns for 2022

All roads lead west for the eagerly anticipated curtain-raiser to the 2022-2023 InsureMyVan.ie Men’s Super League season.

On September 10th, the friends and family of Donie Greene once again welcome participants from the top-tier of Irish basketball to Galway. Now in its fifth instalment, this pre-season tournament has evolved into must-watch basketball for supporters looking to get a first glimpse at the teams hoping to duel it out for league and national cup honours later in the season. This year, the tournament will be held at the Kingfisher Gym in NUIG and will feature NUIG Maree, Moycullen, Garvey’s Tralee Warriors, Tradehouse Central Ballincollig, Griffith College Templeogue, and league newcomers, EJ's Sligo All-Stars.

Group action tips off at 11am, with semi-finals at 4.30pm and final at 6pm.

With defending league & cup champions, Garvey’s Tralee Warriors and last season’s best record holders, Tradehouse Central Ballincollig (15-1) in action, along with a strong Connacht representation, we are promised tough, fast-paced games throughout the day. A fitting tribute to Donie Greene, who would thrive in such a high-quality field.

Donie Greene played with Maree BC, winning numerous underage club and school All-Ireland honours before graduating to the successful Maree National League Teams, where his grit and defensive tenacity was central to winning Conference and National League honours. Donie also excelled on the football pitch, captaining his club Oranmore-Maree to county titles and is a dearly missed member of the Oranmore-Maree community.
