Basketball Ireland invites nominations to board director positions

The Board of Basketball Ireland invites nominations for three positions to serve as Board Director.

Applications are open to all currently registered Basketball Ireland members.

In order to be nominated as a candidate for Elected Director the candidate must receive nominations, with their consent, from any three members. If more than three nominees are put forward, a vote will take place at the upcoming AGM, which will take place at the Castleknock Hotel, Dublin, at 11am on June 18th.

Sport Ireland have indicated to us that the composition of the Basketball Ireland Board should have at least 40% female representation from 2023. The deadline for receipt of Board Director nominations is 5pm, Friday 27th May 2022.

Once completed they should be emailed for the attention of Basketball Ireland CEO, John Feehan, to AGM2022@ireland.basketball, using the subject title ‘Board Director Nomination’. Alternatively completed forms can be posted to Basketball Ireland, National Basketball Arena, Tymon Park, Dublin 24, marked for the attention of CEO, John Feehan, and should be received no later than 5pm, Friday 27th May 2022.

Ms. Dolores Geaney, Mr. Tony Burke and Ms. Theresa Walsh retire by rotation from the Board and being eligible have all offered themselves for re-election. All the nominees submitted for election will be published on the Basketball Ireland website on Saturday 28th May. Please note that as a result of a change in date for the 2022 Basketball Ireland AGM, due to Covid-19, that an extension to the director nomination form deadline and the publication list of nominated candidates was applied, with dates outlined as above.

The position of member of Basketball Ireland's Board of Directors is strictly voluntary. All candidates for Director of Basketball Ireland must be a member of Basketball Ireland on the date of the election in order to be eligible for election to the Board. Prospective candidates to serve as Board Director must be available for 10-12 meetings per annum, plus several ad hoc meeting/strategic planning meeting. Participation in sub-committees of the Board will be required as determined. Meetings are of three-to-four hours duration, with a similar preparation time required.

Candidates would also have the following desirable credentials:

  • experience in the area of Irish corporate governance and sports sector governance
  • evidence of a good understanding of volunteer and not-for-profit organisations
  • previous board/committee experience

In order to qualify for appointment a person must not have any legal impediment or conflicts of interest likely to interfere with his/her ability to assume the role of a member of the Board.

Candidate’s attention is also drawn to the provisions of the Sport Ireland Governance Code (available here).

  • A NGB should be headed by an effective Board which is collectively responsible for the long-term sustainability of the body.
  • Non-executive Board members should bring an independent judgement to bear on issues of strategy, performance resources, key appointments, and standard of conduct.
