Energywise Ireland Neptune victorious in local derby, Singleton SuperValu Brunell maintain unbeaten start

University of Galway Maree and Energywise Ireland Neptune are joint-top of the InsureMyVan.ie Super League, after both kept their unbeaten streaks going, with wins over Garvey’s Tralee Warriors and Emporium Cork Basketball respectively. Defending champions The Address UCC Glanmire and Singleton SuperValu Brunell are the table toppers in the MissQuote.ie Super League, with 3-0 records.

De’Ondre Jackson returned to his former team in Galway in hope of avenging the defeat to Belfast Star last week, but it was University of Galway Maree who impressed on the day in a game the hosts lead from the first basket to finish with a 90-64 victory. Joe-Junior Mvuezolo top scored for the winners with 22 points, while Daniel Jokubaitis clocked up 18 for the reigning champions.

Speaking after the game, University of Galway Maree head coach Charlie Crowley praised the work ethic of the team.

“Delighted to get over the line there tonight against a very good team. Tralee are the champs and rightly so. Our lads dug deep and really worked hard to get that W. Now all guns blazing for Demons next Sunday.”

In the local derby in Cork, Energywise Ireland Neptune have a strong third quarter to thank in securing the 91-87 victory in a thrilling game to mark their third win in as many games. The crowd were treated to a classic with both teams having purple patches, but Colin O’Reilly’s team showed their mettle to get the win. Top scorer on the day was Nil Sabata of Energywise Ireland Neptune with 30 points, while Jordan Blount also scored 22 of his own.

“Really competitive game between two teams that will get stronger as the season goes on. Both had multiple runs through out so was good to time outs late in the 4th. They have been the most consistent team the last 14 months, so to get to challenge them today was great for our development,” Energywise Ireland Neptune head coach Colin O’Reilly said.

On a weekend that they wore their red kit to honour the passing of founding member Noel McCarthy, UCC Blue Demons recorded their first win of the season at home to Moycullen, who are still looking for that elusive first victory. Winning on an 85-60 scoreline, Tala Fam Thiam top scored for the Cork side with a tally of 25, followed closely by Jeremiah Moore on 23 points.

Speaking after the game, UCC Blue Demons head coach Daniel O’Mahony had this to say.

“Was great to get our first win of the season, I felt week on week we are improving and again this coming week, we will work hard and prepare for Maree.“

On the back of a good victory against the reigning champions last weekend, Belfast Star’s unbeaten record fell on Saturday evening. In a thrilling game, Griffith College Templeogue came from behind in a ding-dong battle to win their second game of the season. The game looked to be going to the wire, but Mark Keenan’s outfit managed the game well in the closing stages. Top scorer on the day was Griffith College Templeogue’s Lorcan Murphy with 27.

“Delighted to get the win against a great Star team. The guys were immense and so together,” said Mark Keenan.

EJ Sligo All-Stars couldn’t make home court advantage count as Killester visited on Saturday night. The visitors got ahead early in the game and EJ Sligo All-Stars couldn’t bridge the gap from then on in a valiant performance. Killester move on to a 2-1 record thanks to the 93-84 result and the scoring exploits of Gregorio Adón, who ended up with 27.

 Brian O’Malley, head coach with Killester had braced himself for a tough game coming into the weekend.

 “Delighted to get the win. We expected a battle, and it was. We got a decent start and then were able to respond each time they made a run. Performance was good and gives us stuff to build on.”

 Flexachem KCYMS got their first win of the season on an 89-75 scoreline against a strong Bright St. Vincent’s outfit, who are still without a win of their own. The game was a tight affair in the first couple of quarters, but the Kerry side established their lead in the third and didn’t let it slip. Alex Terradelles top scored for the victors with 24 points.

Elsewhere, DBS Éanna were 83-72 winners against UCD Marian in a thrilling affair. At a packed UCD, the visitors started strong, leading by 11 points after the first, setting the tone for the game. Following the victory, DBS Éanna are on two wins as they look ahead to the trip to Belfast Star next week.

 “UCD gave us all sorts of problems defensively. I’m so happy we stuck together and found some great looks around the basket when things got touch for us. But, we got the win with some great defensive adjustments of ourselves,” said DBS Éanna head coach Darren McGovern.

The MissQuote.ie Super League headlines once again went the way of The Address UCC Glanmire as they clocked up 111 points on their way to beating Leixlip Amenities Liffey Celtics 111-87. Standout on the day was new signing Brittany Byrd with a tally of 45 points in the first three quarters, before sitting out the fourth. The victory seals a 3-0 start for the reigning champions.

 Speaking after the game, head coach Mark Scannell praised the collective effort.

 “Very good win, tough first half but our defence was very good for the second half. Brittany led the way with 45 points and didn’t play in the fourth quarter, but again our strength in depth was key. Amy Dooley, Annalise and Khia were very tough today and the leaders in the squad were very calm in difficult moments. Mia who was super today got a late knock, so hopefully she’ll be okay for a tough assignment in Trinity next week. We keep going, we still have a lot to do, and we will.”

Singleton SuperValu Brunell made the trip to Galway to take on University of Galway Mystics, looking to maintain their unbeaten start. The Cork side did exactly that, winning 72-63. The hosts led by double figures in the third quarter, but the visitors dug in to win. Irish international captain Edel Thornton top scored for the victors with 31 points.

 “Delighted to get our third win in a row. We had to work extremely hard for this win. We executed really well in the final quarter. We have had two really tough road trips in a row and we are looking forward to getting back to playing on our home court next weekend,” said Singleton SuperValu Brunell head coach Liam Culloty.

 Ulster University recorded their first victory of the season, beating i3PT Fr. Mathews 80-71 from their home court. The visitors were narrowly behind for the majority, got ahead in the last quarter, but Ulster University finished strong. Lexi Posset headed the scoring charts for the winners with 28 points to her name.

Coming off the back of a midweek defeat to DCU Mercy, Trinity Meteors produced a quality performance to win on the road against Killester, who had led by 12 in the second quarter. The victory hands Trinity Meteors a 2-1 record this time out. Top scorer on the day was Killester’s Michelle Clarke on 28 points, while Trinity Meteors’ Claire Melia got 22 points of her own.

 Speaking after the win, Trinity Meteors head coach Niall Berry had this to say.

 “Obviously we’re delighted with the win tonight. We had to dig deep because Killester are a top side and playing in front of their fantastic home support would always give you a massive boost as a player.

 “I’m very proud of our girls for their performance, especially in that second half. I really saw our girls coming together a lot which is something every coach loves to see. It’s a long season so we’ll value the wins when we get them, but we know we have a lot of work to do in the coming weeks to get where we want to be.”

DCU Mercy picked up their second win in a week after their Wednesday victory over Trinity Meteors, defeating Waterford Wildcats 70-66 on Sunday. Lindsey Abed top scored for DCU Mercy with a 27 point haul. Head coach Mark Ingle said: “It was a very tough game. Waterford play a very physical game, but our girls were strong down the stretch especially, hitting crucial free throws when Waterford fouled at the end. We are delighted with the win."

In MissQuote.ie Division 1, McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles got their third win in succession by beating Oblate Dynamos 78-53. Alarie Mayze top scored with 22 for the hosts. The other side to maintain their winning record were Portlaoise Panthers who got the better of Swords Thunder on a 73-56 scoreline. Alyssa Velles and Jessica Fressle both top scored for the winners with 27 points each.

 Elsewhere, Moy Tolka Rovers had Shelby Cheslek’s tally of 30 to guide their way to the narrowest of victories against Phoenix Rockets, beating them 64-63 to give them a 2-1 record after three games.

 Limerick Celtics impressed against Marble City Hawks as they ran out victorious on a 77-47 scoreline. After an even first half, the Limerick side showed their class from the third. Adriana Acosta top scored with 19 points of her own.

 Abbey Seals Dublin Lions won their match-up with Griffith College Templeogue 66-62. The sides could hardly be separated early on and the visitors led by ten points in the third, before succumbing the lead at the start of the fourth. The games top scorer was Abbey Seals Dublin Lions Amelia Motz with a tally of 29.

On Sunday SETU Carlow overcame Limerick Sport Huskies 60-46, with Scout Frame contributing over half the points for the victors, with 34 points

In InsureMyVan.ie Division 1, three sides are still unbeaten.

Limerick Celtics were dominant against Killarney Cougars, winning out 111-52. Their top scorer was Joshua Reynolds with 26 points. Moy Tolka Rovers were in scintillating form to overcome Drogheda Wolves 97-69. Matt Treacy was in impeccable form, picking up 37 points on his way to the win. The last side yet to taste defeat are Ulster University. They beat Team North West in the midweek game, winning on an 88-61 scoreline.

 SETU Carlow got the better of Dwyers of Cork Fr. Mathews on the road on an 86-70 scoreline, making it two wins from three. Sean McManus of the Cork side top scored on the day with 22 points.

 Limerick Sport Eagles got a 95-72 win on the road against SETU Waterford Vikings. Their talisman Manny Payton shone on the night with 36 points to give them a 2-1 record so far this season.

Elsewhere, Malahide got the better of Abbey Seals Dublin Lions on a 89-75 scoreline to give them their second win. Top scorer on the day went to Trevor Recio who finished on 28 points.
