Templeogue Basketball Club History

Early Years

Templeogue Basketball Club was formed in 1976 by a group of Past Pupils from Templeogue College. At that time little did they know that 40 years later the club would have grown into the Club it is today. In the first 20 years TBC was a relatively small club, with a couple of teams playing in Dublin Senior Leagues and the odd underage team coming along and injecting a few young players into the club. During this period these teams did enjoy some considerable success in winning Dublin League and Cup titles and our U19 team narrowly lost out to Neptune in The National Cup Final in 1985. But by and large it was a relatively small tight knit group of players.

Underage Development Strategy

It was in the late 90’s and early 00’s that a concerted effort was made to set up an underage structure within the club. This was led mainly by the senior players of the 80’s and early 90’s who were now settled down with kids of their own and who introduced them to the sport of basketball. Quickly TBC’s underage teams became very successful and were competing with the best in Ireland. This all came to fruition from 2007 onwards when the club won its first National Title, the coveted U18 National Cup, a title that the club would go on to win another 3 times in addition to an U20 title and culminating with an incredible 2016 – when we won The Hula Hoops Men’s National Cup and the U16 Boys (A) All Ireland Club Championships, the first time that the club has won 2 such prestigious National titles in the same year.

Today

We now find ourselves 40 years later as Men’s National Cup Champions, a title we could only ever have dreamed of 5 years ago when we entered the Men’s Superleague. We are entering our 4th season in the top league in Ireland and now recognised as being one of the top teams and clubs in the country. In May 2016 we were selected as one of the Top 20 Sports Club in Ireland by The Irish Times. We have one of the most exciting Superleague teams (and supporters) and we expect to challenge for all the major honours. We have some fantastic underage teams coming through in boys and girls categories and our academy for 5-11 year olds is growing every year. The club also reached another milestone in it’s history with the ladies entering the National league in 2019.
