Gerve and McGloughlin to lead U17 WNT and U17 MNT programmes

Basketball Ireland's Elite Performance Committee (EPC) has filled two head coaching positions ahead of the 2026/27 international season.

Andrius Gerve has been re-appointed as U17 WNT head coach, following a silver medal finish at the Home Nations in Scotland this year. Gerve’s squad won two out of three games, beating Scotland and Wales en route to their podium finish.

“I want to thank all of last year’s players and parents for the effort, dedication and commitment throughout the programme,” said Gerve. “It was an incredible journey, and I am really honoured to get an opportunity to lead another group this year. Let’s learn, practice, make mistakes and get better together.”

Gerve started coaching in 2016 in Germany at various levels, including the national programme, and received his coaching license the same year. At Irish national level, Gerve has served as head coach of the U14 and U15 Girl’s National Academy, as well as U17 Women’s Academy. He has also served as head coach of the U16 and U19 Boys Castleknock Community College Basketball programme and became a certified Coach Developer with Sport Ireland in 2025.

Ian McGloughlin steps into the role of U17 MNT head coach following a successful spell as assistant coach. The U17 MNT lifted the Home Nations title finishing ahead of England on head-to-head, with the crucial game being Ireland’s 77-64 win over England in the opening fixture. Ireland slipped to a 97-81 defeat to Scotland, meaning that they needed a victory against Wales in their final game to help secure the title and they did it in style with an 85-48 success.

“I’m extremely privileged and proud to take on the role of Ireland U17 Men’s Academy Head Coach. It’s a fantastic opportunity to work with some of the country’s most talented young players, and I’m really looking forward to working closely with the players, staff and everyone involved in the programme,” said McGloughlin. “This age group plays a pivotal role in preparing these players for the transition to U18, U20 and finally the Senior Men's programme.”

“There has been a lot of excellent work done in previous years, and I hope to build on those foundations, continue to develop the players both individually and collectively, and help create an environment where they can reach their full potential. I’m excited about what lies ahead and I feel very fortunate to be part of it,” added McGloughlin.

McGloughlin is the current head coach of St. Mary’s Castleisland’s U18 men’s team and has previous experience working with academy and underage programmes around the country. McGloughlin was also head coach of the Southwest Schools U15 Boys and has worked as a Basketball Development Officer with Basketball Ireland and Cork Basketball Board
