  • Upload Coaching Certificate to Sport80
  • Add coach licence in Sport80

 The Application Process

What do you need to do in order to get a Coaching Licence?

Step 1

Check that you have completed the following in order to be eligible for a Coaching Licence:

  • That you have completed at least one Sport Ireland-endorsed Basketball Ireland coaching course since 1997. If you have not completed a course, upcoming public courses will be announced through Helpside or you can contact your local area board/Development Officer.
  • If you wish to check if you are qualified as a basketball coach with Sport Ireland, please email Niall McDermott - nmcdermott@ireland.basketball - with as much information on your course as possible and he can confirm your level.
  • That you have completed Garda Vetting through Basketball Ireland, or via AccessNI for those that are based in Northern Ireland, in the last five years. NOTE: If it has been longer than five years, you must renew your vetting before you will become eligible. To apply to renew Garda vetting please check out  e-vetting page.
  • That you have completed the Safe Guarding 1 Course. (Please note that coaches under the age 18 do not require this but must complete the course as soon as they turn 18 in order to keep their licence).

Step 2

Register with Basketball Ireland as a coach through the online registration system for technical members and pay the technical registration fee. (BI Registration Guide)

  • Coaches must register with Basketball Ireland each season.
  • Registration is completed through the Sport80 registration platform.
  • Note you will need to be Garda Vetted and to upload the document for your vetting at the time of registration or you will not be able to register as a coach.

Step 3

Upload your coaching certificate, vetting certificate and safeguarding certificate to Sport80.

Click "Licences" and then "Add coaching Licence".

You should then see a green "current" licence activated.

What happens next?

Basketball Ireland will then process your Coaching Licence application and you will see it displayed on your Sport80 profile.

Once you have received your license:

It's recommended you take a screenshot or have a printout of your licence in order to produce it at the various Basketball Ireland Competitions you may be involved in.

A Basketball Ireland Coaching Licence will be the only form of proof accepted to show that as a coach, you are qualified, registered and Garda vetted/AccessNI certified and proof of completing a minimum of a Child Safeguarding 1 Course, and/or Sport Ireland's Safeguarding refresher course.

Important Note

No coach will be able to take part in any Basketball Ireland competitions without holding a Coaching Licence and this will be strictly enforced.
