Coach Licencing

Coaches Licencing

The new Basketball Ireland’s Coaching Licence application process is now officially open. You can complete your coach licence application through Helpside, Basketball Ireland's online learning management system.

A coaching Licence is compulsory for any coach wishing to coach a team in Basketball Ireland Competitions of any level.

Information on the application process is below, and you can click here to visit Helpside to submit your application. Once you are logged into Helpside look for the "Coach Licencing" option on the main menu at the top of the page.

The Application Process

What do you need to do in order to get a Coaching Licence?

Step 1

Check that you have completed the following in order to be eligible for a Coaching Licence:

  • That you have completed at least one Sport Ireland-endorsed Basketball Ireland coaching course since 1997. If you have not completed a course, a list of courses is available on Basketball Ireland’s online shop or you can contact your local area board/Development officer.

Please note: If you wish to check if you are qualified as a Basketball Coach with Sport Ireland, please email Patrick O'Neill - coachingcourses@ireland.basketball - with as much information on your course as possible and she can confirm your level.

  • That you have completed Garda Vetting through Basketball Ireland, or via AccessNI for those that are based in Northern Ireland, in the last five years. NOTE: If it has been longer than five years, you must renew your vetting before you will become eligible. To apply to renew Garda vetting please check out or e-vetting page

  • That you have completed the Safe Guarding 1 Course. (Please note that coaches under the age 18 do not require this but must complete the course as soon as they turn 18 in order to keep their licence.)

Step 2

Register with Basketball Ireland as a coach through the online registration system for technical members and pay the technical registration fee. (BI Registration Guide)

Step 3

Complete the online coaching licence application form on Helpside in full once you have completed Steps 1 and 2. Please make sure you attach any requested information as incomplete forms will not be processed.

What happens next?

Basketball Ireland will then process your Coaching Licence application and post out your licence (During busy times this could take up to 21 days). If you are not eligible for a licence due to non-compliance of Steps 1 or 2 you will be notified by email within due course.

Once you have received your license:

Keep your Coaching Licence safe in order to produce it as required at the various Basketball Ireland Competitions you may be involved in.

From September 1st, 2018, a Basketball Ireland Coaching Licence will be the only form of proof accepted to show that as a coach, you are qualified, registered and Garda vetted/AccessNi certified and proof of completing a minimum of a Child Safeguarding 1 Course, and/or Sport Irelands Safeguarding Refresher course.

Replacement licences will be issued at a cost of €10 to cover the licence and postage.

Important Note

From the start of the 2021/22 season, no coach will be able to take part in any Basketball Ireland competitions without holding a Coaching Licence and this will be strictly enforced.
