Ireland U16 women's head coach selects 29 strong squad for 2023/24

Ireland U16 women's head coach Paul O'Brien has named an initial 29-person squad, as preparations begin in earnest for the 2024 FIBA European Championship. 

O'Brien can call upon three returning players from last year's squad. Kaitlyn Summers (3.1pts, 2.9rebs, 1.9ast), Aoibheann Donnelly (4.3pts, 1.7rebs, 1.6ast) and Francesco Kyamagero (1.6pts, 2.3rebs) all featured prominently as Ireland registered a 3-4 record in a 14th place finish in 2023. 

Limerick Celtics are the most prominent club among the new faces with five players represented, closely followed by Templeogue (four) and Kilkenny Stars (three). In total, players have been selected from eight counties, Dublin, Westmeath, Limerick, Antrim, Galway, Cork, Kilkenny and Kerry.  

"We are delighted to announce our first squad," said coach O'Brien.  "We have selected 29 high quality players who possess great skill and the ability to improve over the course of the programme. It was a hard selection to make as the standard of the players that came to the trials was extremely high and we have picked the players who we feel are going to fit in with what we are trying to do.  I am incredibly excited to get to work with this group who I feel have massive potential," he added.
