Oblates are the inaugural U18 Boys All-Ireland League champions, leading from start to finish as they defeated Titans 92-68 at the National Basketball Arena on Saturday. Augustine Farrell had 27 points and six rebounds to pick up the MVP, backed up by a strong performance from his co-captain Joaquin Pahinag, who had 24 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

It wasn’t the ideal start for Titans when they lost their starter Noah Mung’oma Webb to injury two and a half minutes in. Oblates began strongly and back-to-back threes from Farrell had the Dublin club 23-8 up with three and a half minutes to go in the first quarter. Farrell would have 13 points by the end of the quarter, to help Oblates into a 28-14 lead.
Farrell continued where he left off at the start of the second quarter with a deep three in the second minute. Titans captain Nathan Gbinigie responded with back-to-back baskets to make it an 11-point game, 31-20. A three from Ferdinand Osabuohien with 1’50 to go in the quarter got Titans fans off their feet, as they trailed by 10, 41-31. They cut that deficit further through Einaras Miltinis, only for Meyal Monshengwo to have the final say for Oblates, as they led 43-33 at the break.
Oblates raced out of the blocks to start the third quarter, with a six point run. Pahinag, Adomas Makaraitis and Andrew Gulevsik grabbing baskets, to put them 49-33 ahead. They stretched the gap to 20 points following a two point jump shot from the potent Farrell midway through the quarter and Oblates led 61-41. A three from Pahinag in the dying seconds and Obates had a commanding 74-50 advantage.

The fourth quarter belonged to Pahinag, he landed his third three of the contest to begin proceedings in the fourth quarter, as the momentum continued in the favour of Oblates. His layup with three minutes gone had Olates 83-54 up, Pahinag’s tally up to 19 points. He wasn’t finished yet, a three and a layup followed, which brought it 90-56 midway through the quarter. Titans responded with an eight-point run after that to cut the deficit, but it was to be Oblates day.

Speaking after the game, MVP and Oblates co-captain Farrell said: “It’s huge, we got knocked out of the National Cup in the semi-finals and we thought we were going to win that, but to come back and win this is great, it’s great for everyone. We’re not the biggest club, we don’t have any Super League teams, this probably the best team in our club, it’s great.”
