Trinity Meteors got back to where they left off in the Domino’s WSL, beating Career Decicion’s UCC Glanmire 65-63.
The game was decided in the final minute of play, where Emani Jenkins levelled the game at 61-61 with a deep three, before Morgan Lenahan converted two free throws to give the lead back to Trinity Meteors. Jenkins danced past the Meteors defence to level the game again with a mid-range jumper, but it was Irish international Hazel Finn who won the game on in Coláiste Íosagáin with seven seconds on the clock.
Glanmire signings Jenkins and Tae Jordan topped the leaderboards with 26 and 20 points respectively, as they look forward to a home fixture next week against Midlands Park Portlaoise Panthers. Trinity Meteors will carry their win to Killarney next week, with a blockbuster fixture set against Utility Trust St. Paul’s.
St. Paul’s secured a big win on the road against Killester in the opening round, winning by four points in the Oblate Hall. Killester’s Kennedy Townsend looked unstoppable in the first half, racking up 18 points and 10 rebounds, but although she finished the game with 32 points, the power-scoring from Angelina Robles, Paula Reus Piza and Maisie Burnham proved to be the tipping point.
Utility Trust St. Paul’s led the game by one-point at the end of the first quarter, only for Killester to take a two-point lead into the half. From that moment on, St. Paul’s stayed on top and saw the game out to the end.
Kilah Freelon introduced herself to the Domino’s WSL with 31 points and 19 rebounds for VSC Cavan Eagles against Midlands Park Portlaoise Panthers. Her fellow signing Darrione Rogers made five three-pointers en route to the 66-88 win. The Cavan side took a healthy ten-point lead into the second quarter, leaving a large hill for Portlaoise Panthers to climb, but the game was ultimately decided in the third quarter, when VSC Cavan Eagles widened the lead to 20.
Midlands Park Portlaoise Panthers will hope to get back on track against Career Decisions UCC Glanmire next week, and VSC Cavan Eagles will host FloMAX Liffey Celtics.
Jeni Levine and Treasure Thompson opened their Domino’s WSL accounts with some heavy scoring, but it wasn’t to be for the newly promoted Limerick Celtics, as FloMAX Liffey Celtics came away 77-63 winners. The two American’s combined for 43 points and 16 rebounds; however, the experience of Lynn Tunnah and Sorcha Tiernan guided Liffey Celtics to the win. FloMAX Liffey Celtics turned up the heat for their home crowd in the final quarter, outscoring Limerick Celtics by 18-8.
Limerick Celtics will seek redemption in gameweek two against Gurranabraher Credit Union Brunell, as they host their Cork neighbours, and FloMAX Liffey Celtics look to continue their run of form against VSC Cavan Eagles.
SETU Waterford Wildcats secured their first win of the season in a 90-77 win against Gurranabraher Credit Union Brunell. The Wildcats played fearless basketball, with new signing Brooklyn Gray scoring 30 points and grabbing ten rebounds, while Irish international Sarah Hickey scored 29 points with ten rebounds. The away side took a 14-point lead by half-time and never eased off for the remaining 30 minutes.
