Belfast Star maintained their narrow one game lead atop the Domino’s Men’s Super League with a double-digit win over Flexachem KCYMS ahead of the second round of fixtures on Bank Holiday weekend.
Wins for Griffith College Éanna and Garvey’s Tralee Warriors on the road moved them into second and third respectively, while Ejs Sligo All-Stars and Ballincollig also picked up wins to climb into the top half of the table.
Garvey’s Tralee Warriors made it three successive wins on the back of a sensational performance from Irshaad Hunte in a back-and-forth contest with Limerick Celtics. Hunte struck 34 points and 20 rebounds in a game where the lead changed hands 19 times. AJ Williams was the lead scorer for a now 1-3 Celtics outfit, who also enjoyed strong contributions from Irish duo Finn Hughes with 18 and Ruairi Cronin with 16.
Ballincollig are another team finding their rhythm after an 0-2 start and their 86-71 win over UCD Marian brought them back to .500 for the year. The starting trio of Adrian O’Sullivan, Josh Steel and Latrell Jossell all continued their fine form as they scored 50 of Ballincollig’s 86 points. O’Sullivan dropped 18 points with seven rebounds, Steel had 14 points and Jossell scored 18. For UCD Marian, it was the case of a Jeckyl and Hyde display, as they led by 17 in the first half and took an eight-point lead into the half-time break. Both sides are now tied up at 2-2 with Ballincollig in fourth and Marian in fifth.
Energywise Ireland Neptune suffered a fourth straight defeat against Griffith College Éanna in a 94-80 loss. Mikah Blackwell and Kristijan Andabacka both scored over 20 points for Éanna as they got some relief on the injury front with the return of Neil Lynch and Irish international Sean Jenkins to re-enforce a squad that looks to compete this year at the top. The win sees Éanna go to second in the standings whilst the loss keeps Neptune at the foot of the table as they travel to Limerick to take on the Celtics in their second game of the weekend on Monday.
Belfast Star remained the only undefeated side in the Domino’s Men’s Super League as they handed Flexachem KCYMS a second straight loss in a 90-77 win for Belfast on Saturday night. Rapolas Buivydas continued his fine form with 27 points on 34 efficiency for Star. For Killorglin, they now fall to 2-2 from a game where four players scored in double digits for the Kerry side. They will look to make it 3-2 on Monday as they face St. Vincent’s.
Elsewhere, Ejs Sligo All-Stars bounced back from a disappointing result a week ago, as they won 101-88 against a St. Vincents team that falls into the bottom three in the standings with a 1-3 record. Sligo had three players with at least 20 point double-doubles in the game. Christian Williams had 23 points with 10 rebounds, John Carroll had 23 points with 14 rebounds and Ryell Rodney Etyle-Rock had 21 points on 21 efficiency. Sligo travel to Éanna on Monday whilst Vincent’s host Killorglin looking to get out of the bottom half of the table.
In the only Sunday fixture on offer in the Domino’s Men’s Super League saw defending champions UCC Demons rocky start to their defence continue as they saw defeat against Killester 81-73 in Mardyke Arena. Josh Wilson starred for Killester with 37 points, six rebounds and four steals. The lead went back and forth in the first half but in the second half Killester took over and commanded a lead from the start of the third until the end of the game. The win saw Killester go to 3-1 before they had their round five game on Monday.
Unfortunately for Demons, their fortunes on Monday didn’t fair any better as they saw another defeat against UCD Marian in a 97-86 loss which saw them fall to 1-4. Marian had some stellar performances on Monday from Tanner Graham and Ronan Byrne with both players getting double-doubles and Mihael Linde adding 17 points to boot. For UCD Marian, the win puts them in fifth as they reach 3-2 for the season.
Killester had a game of a polar opposite energy on Monday as they lost 90-68 to Ballincollig. The win gave Ballincollig their second of the weekend and put them into the top three in the Men’s Super League standings. Four of Ballincollig’s starting five hit double digits with star Latavious Mitchell scoring 23 and adding 18 rebounds. The loss puts Killester at 3-2 and one place below Ballincollig in fourth.
Elsewhere in the second round of fixtures, Belfast Star went 5-0 for the season after a 85-73 victory over Garvey’s Tralee Warriors. Roger Wilson had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds for Star as they followed up their Saturday night win over Killorglin with another win on Sunday to remain the only unbeaten team in the division. As for Tralee, they fall to sixth with a 3-2 record after a win against Limerick Celtics on Saturday.
Promoted side Limerick Celtics managed to get their season back on track after they edged Energywise Ireland Neptune 75-73 in UL on Monday. A.J Williams and Abdul Wurie combined for 47 points for Celtics in a game that was within six points for the final four minutes of the game. Williams and Eoghan Donaghy’s free throws inside the final minute iced the game for Celtics to take home the win and get to 2-3 which sees them go to seventh in the Domino’s Men’s Super League.
Griffith College Éanna continued their good form as they made it four wins in five as they defeated EJ Sligo All-Stars 87-73 on Monday. Éanna had a great team showing with Sean Jenkins scoring 21, Mikah Blackwell dropped 20 and Kristijan Andabaka hitting 19 with 12 rebounds for good measure. The victory for Éanna has them rising to second place at 4-1. Whilst Sligo, behind a 30-point showing from Ryell Rodney Etyle-Rock, fall to ninth and suffer their third defeat of the campaign.
In the final game of our double gameweek in the Domino’s Men’s Super League, St. Vincent’s tied up their record against opponents Flexachem KCYMS as they took home the victory 99-94 in Glasnevin. Vincent’s had six players in double digits with Daniel Ogoro and Jaylyn Richardson leading the way with both scoring 19 each. For Killorglin, they had a 29-point game from Jeffery Okeke accompanied by a 22-point game from Jordan Blount who had 13 rebounds to go with it. Both teams now sit at 2-3 with Killorglin in eight position and Vincnent’s sit in 10th in the Domino’s Men’s Super League.
