Liam was introduced to basketball during his school days at St. Declan's College, Rochestown, Co. Cork. Here he showed early promise, playing for the college and for Munster at underage level.
Liam moved on from college and joined Neptune Basketball Club in 1962, where he has been a leading personality and a driving force ever since.
For more than 20 years, he played at all levels for the club, but his major contribution undoubtedly came through his administrative roles as Treasurer of Neptune and through his huge involvement in the building of Neptune Stadium in 1985. Together with his colleagues Niall O'Riordan and Michael Finn, these three brought about the first purpose-built basketball stadium in Ireland.
It is difficult looking back to the eighties to comprehend the foresight and courage required at that time to undertake a massive project such as the building of the stadium. But they did it, and Liam was one of the three "wise men."
Liam was also serving on the National Executive during this period, first as Treasurer and then as President from 1982 to 1985.
At that time, the association faced financial difficulties, and once again Liam McGinn demonstrated his flair and common sense in steering the association to a successful outcome.
During Liam's presidency, the association moved onto a more professional footing, taking on full-time staff and establishing proper headquarters.
Not content with sorting out Cork and Dublin, Liam then extended his talents internationally, becoming Treasurer of the Irish American Sports Foundation. This influential U.S. body was the vehicle for funding basketball activities in Ireland.
Liam's next and highly significant role was as Chairman of the National Arena Committee and Board of Directors.
His contribution to this building was outstanding. Other directors will tell you that during many difficult times, the smiling and confident presence of Liam McGinn helped keep everybody focused on their goal and enabled the delivery of the fine arena we have today.
Liam McGinn made a very significant contribution to Irish basketball at many levels for almost 40 years.
