Preview: Killester in search of “balance” in Domino’s Women’s Super League

This weekend in the Domino’s Women’s Super League throws up a mouth-watering tie with the top two in Killester and Utility Trust St. Pauls Killarney facing off on Saturday in the IWA. Killester enjoyed a fourth consecutive victory with an 11-point win over Trinity Meteors coming last weekend. Head Coach Mark Grennell is preparing to get his side playoff-ready as the regular season winds down.

Speaking about Killester’s goals in the near future, Grennell said “I think that goal number one is a top-2 spot and secure home court. Like everyone it has been a gruelling season and injuries play their part. We have suffered quite a bit this season with that. We are trying to find good balance between being fresh for the playoffs, but also, we want the best finishing position possible.

When asked about the main priorities, Grennell added “The main thing going into the playoffs is the mood of the players and the confidence in the group. I think our schedule will have us battle tested and ready to go. In terms of finishing as number 1 seed, it is not going to define us one way or the other”.

Utility Trust St. Pauls Killarney are sitting in second, but have an identical record with Killester. The previous defeat to Killester means they hold the advantage at the top. Killarney are on a hot streak at the right time as we approach the end of the season, winning seven straight games in the league, including a 19-point triumph over FloMAX Liffey Celtics last weekend.

UCC Glanmire face a tough task this weekend, heading to fifth-spot Trinity Meteors, who will be hoping to close the gap on the top four. Glanmire won last time out, defeating Fr. Mathews 87-56. They currently sit in third with a 10-5 record, one win ahead of Brunell and two up on their opponents Meteors. Glanmire head coach Mark Scannell is looking to the future as we approach playoff time.

“We are very happy to be where we are going into the last three rounds of games. Our form is good, we played better in the loss to Waterford than we did against Fr. Mathews last weekend. So, every game brings different challenges and this one will be another difficult test. But like all teams, our eye is on the biggest prize and we need to build on every game and see where it takes us”. Scannell said.

Trinity Meteors suffered a defeat at the wrong time, with the loss against Killester now leaving them a full game behind Brunell in the fight for the top-four. They have slightly struggled in recent weeks, with three of their last four fixtures ending in defeat in the Domino’s Women’s Super League. They are not completely out of the running yet, with a potential win this weekend closing the gap to their opponents Glanmire to just one game, which would open the race to third a lot more.

There is another close battle this weekend with seventh-place McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles taking on FloMAX Liffey Celtics. Celtics will be looking to get their season back on track, with one victory out of their last four, they will be looking to make. A late push for an improved playoff seeding. Destinee Bursch and Aine O’Connor will be hoping for more of the same this weekend after the pair combined for 37 points last weekend in the defeat.

For Eagles, the promoted side are looking to recover after last weekend’s loss to the Wildcats that halted their momentum after winning four of the previous five. A win for Eagles or Celtics here could propel them up the table with the possibility that either side could go level with as high as fifth, depending on how Meteors and Wildcats fair this weekend.

Gurranabraher Credit Union Brunell are hoping to extend their advantage in the battle for fourth this weekend when they make the short journey across Cork to face Catalyst Fr. Mathews. Brunell have secured victory in two of the last three games and will be hoping to pick up even more confidence ahead of what will be a closely-contested playoffs.

Fr. Mathews will be hoping for a turn up in fortunes this weekend as they continue to search for the first win that has eluded them to this point in the season. At 0-15, Fr. Mathews will be looking to gather some late-season momentum and just make Midlands Park Portlaoise Panthers sweat a bit more at the bottom of the table.

SETU Waterford Wildcats are another side looking to place their hat in the race for the top-four after a crucial triumph over Eagles last weekend. Currently at 8-7, with Meteors joint-fifth with them. They will be hoping to join Brunell on nine wins when they welcome Midlands Park Portlaoise Panthers on Sunday.

The Panthers, similar to Fr.Mathews, have endured a rather torrid time this season with a record of 2-13 despite some inspired showings. Panthers will be hoping to get a third win of the season, to more importantly move further away from the foot of the table and avoid relegation.

All of this weekend’s games will be live and exclusively shown on BITV.
