Ireland U20 men's head coach Thomas Walsh has named two uncapped players in his 12 man squad ahead of FIBA Youth EuroBasket 2025. 6'4 guard and East Carolina commit Daithi Quinn, alongside another 19 year-old guard, Tiernan Stynes - son of former Dublin GAA and AFL star Jim - will win their first caps when taking the floor against Estonia in July.
Quinn averaged 23 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals per game as a junior for Tabor Academy in Massachusetts last season, while Stynes had four points, three rebounds and just over one assist per game in his freshman season at the University of Quincy. Stynes appeared in 19 games, starting four.
Four players return from the squad which finished with a 3-4 record and 14th in the tournament a year ago - Daryl Cuff (UCC Demons), Jack Kehoe (Unattached), Aivaras Uosis (Carson Newman University, USA) and Philip Kearney (Limerick Celtics). Uosis and Kehoe both played significant minutes last year, while Cuff, who was part of UCC Demons Domino's Men's Super League winning squad this season and Kearney, who featured prominently as Limerick Celtics won the Domino's Men's Division One and U20 Men's National League, were also big contributors.
Elsewhere, Harry Scully (St. Thomas More, USA), Fortune Igbokwe, Declan Gbinigie (both Titans BC) and Joshua Osayanrhion (Garvey's Tralee Warriors) make the step up from the Ireland U18 programme, adding considerable size, skill and athelticism to the group. The latter trio's inclusion comes after breakthrough seasons in the Domino's Men's Super League and Domino's Men's Division One respectively.
Ryan Calo (University of Pittsburgh, Johnstown, USA) last featured for Ireland at the FIBA U18 Men's Youth EuroBasket in 2022, while Tony Ezeonu(Ohio Dominican University, USA) most recently represented Ireland at the same level in 2022 and 2023.
“I want to thank all players for participating in some intense trials over the past few months," said head coach Thomas Walsh. It was great to see the competitiveness for a spot on this roster. Putting the U20 squad together is never easy. We’ve been watching the league all season and keeping close contact with our overseas players. We have some great talent and experience in this squad and we’re very excited to represent Ireland in Armenia in July."
Ireland have been drawn in Group B along with Armenia, Estonia, Montenegro and Latvia. Estonia will be the first game for Walsh's side on Saturday, July 12th followed by Armenia the following evening. Latvia are next up on Tuesday, July 15th, before we close group play against Montenegro less than 24 hours later. The top two from the group will progress to the next round.
