Following a nomination period for the upcoming vacant spaces on the Basketball Ireland Board of Directors, four nominations have been received to fill the three vacancies on the Board caused by the retirement of incumbent Directors, namely Paul McDevitt (ineligible to be re-elected), Dolores Geaney and Theresa Walsh (eligible).
Background:
Dolores has been involved in basketball since school, as a player, coach and referee and subsequently in club basketball in Galway and Dublin, in a player and management capacity. Geaney is currently chair of Meteors Ladies Basketball Club and part of the Irish senior women’s management team.
Professionally, Geaney has worked in the financial services industry for over 25 years, at company director and C-suite level, focusing on governance, strategy, integration, change management, and regulation.
Background:
Marco's volunteering experience across different sports is vast. He was appointed as an Executive member of the Ongar Chasers Basketball Club and managed his daughters U14 team, before moving to Tipperary, where he is an Executive member of Thurles Rugby Club, assisting in the process to implement a Company Limited by Guarantee into the governance structure. He is also secretary of the Thurles LGFA club.
Marco has 30 years experience across a variety of sectors in Financial Services and developed expertise in corporate governance, risk management and compliance. He has also been heavily involved in governance as a chief risk officer, executive director, as a coach to senior leaders who are transitioning to a Board role.
Background:
Theresa has been involved in basketball for over 30 years as an administrator, player, coach, technical officer (at both local and national levels) and as the President of Basketball Ireland, serving in the role for two terms, from 2016 to 2020. When she was elected in 2016, she became just the second female President of Basketball Ireland.
Theresa Walsh is a public servant with vast experience in a variety of administration roles.
Background:
PJ Reidy served two terms as President of Basketball Ireland, from 2020 to 2024, succeeding Theresa Walsh in the role. Previously Mr. Reidy was ingrained in administration of Schools’ basketball, serving as Secretary of the Post Primary Schools Committee (PPSC) as well as various other roles within the sport in Ireland down through the years.
In 2023, Reidy was appointed to the FIBA Europe Technical Commission. The remit of the Commission was to be ‘Competent for all matters concerning the interpretation and application of the Official Basketball Rules and the state of the game around the world.’
The vote will take place at the AGM of Basketball Ireland on Saturday 10th May 2025 at 11 o’clock at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Blanchardstown, Dublin.
Members entitled and intending to vote must produce evidence of their nomination to vote on behalf of a particular Voting Member to BI staff.
Ideally, this should be done before the date of the meeting, but alternatively between 10:00 and 10:45 on the day of the meeting to allow for the timely start of the meeting.
