McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles inflict first loss on Limerick Sport Huskies while Titans BC maintain perfect start

McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles battled their way back from 10 points down to inflict a first defeat of the season on Women’s Division One rivals, Limerick Sport Huskies, winning out 67-53 in St. Munchin’s College on Saturday evening, while, in Men’s Division One, Titans BC made it three from three after they dug out a 93-84 win on the road against Scotts Lakers Killarney.

McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles fought back from a 10-point deficit early in the second quarter to inflict a first loss of the Women’s Division One season on Limerick Sport Huskies, winning out 67-53 in St. Munchin’s College on Saturday.

Lanetta Williams and Rahmena Henderson led the charge for the visitors, as they teamed up for a total of 38 points and 19 rebounds to help run down a Limerick side, for whom Scout Frame and Delia Moore put up 32 points and 18 rebounds.

“It’s never easy playing a quality team like the Huskies and we were very happy to come away with the win” said McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles head coach, John Stephens.

“The Huskies have had a strong start to the season, with some big individual scoring performances, so we knew we had to execute on defence. It was a great team effort” he added.

Templeogue also demonstrated great resilience to open their account in Division One with a 58-51 triumph over Cleveland Rockets in Lisburn Racquets Club.

Finding themselves eight points adrift of their hosts a minute into the second quarter, Templeogue stormed back thanks in no small measure to the 29 points and 25 rebounds for which Joelle Burnley and Hannah Murphy combined.

ISecure Swords Thunder extended their unbeaten run to three games after they too recovered from a first-quarter deficit to surmount a severe challenge from Oblate Dynamos 75-67 in ALSAA.

Makayla Miller was a telling factor in this victory, serving up a huge 31 points, 12 rebounds and four assists that went a long way to countering the combined 31 points from Oblate’s Heather Meagher and Sophie Staunton.

Abbey Seals Dublin Lions made it two from three in their Women’s Division One campaign after they ran out 100-86 winners over Limerick Celtics in Coláiste Bríde.

The newly-acquired Jessica Fressle and Sofia Paska were immense for the Clondalkin outfit as they combined for a huge 63 points and 23 rebounds that more than addressed Shelby Harmeyer’s impressive haul of 30 points and 10 rebounds for the visitors.

Titans BC’s great start to the 2024/25 Men’s Division One season continued with a 93-84 road win over Scotts Lakers Killarney on Saturday night.

Michael Hayes served up a huge performance for the visitors, amassing 44 points and 13 rebounds, while Charles Pepin weighed in with 24 points, to help fend off a tough Killarney side that was driven on by Mikah Blackwell and his 29-point haul on the night.

“It was a great game” Titans BC head coach, Ciaran Kiveney said.  “At times we thought we were pulling away, but St. Paul’s never gave up and kept coming back at us.

“Going down to Killarney, with the big hike, support is always hard, so to come away with the ‘W’ is massive for us.

“The lads showed true resilience to keep going as St. Paul’s kept coming back at us, but we stuck to our game plan and, in the end, it worked for us” he smiled.

Limerick Celtics kept pace with their Galway rivals at the top of the table as they inflicted a first loss on SETU Waterford Vikings, winning out 96-73 in SETU College Hall.

Limerick book-ended this performance with big first and fourth-quarter wins as Ariyon Williams carded a game-high 33 points, while Finn Hughes and Abdul Wurie each weighed in with a further 18 for the visitors.

Mater Private Malahide turned up the heat in the second and third quarters to run out 97-85 winners over Drogheda Wolves at home on Saturday night, subsequently keeping intact, their own unbeaten start to the season.

The hosts had five players in double figures, including Romonn Nelson and Murray Hendry on 25 and 17 points respectively, although it was Drogheda’s Christian Simmons who emerged the game’s top scorer on 28.

Despite a massive 40-point contribution from Kani Glover, Killarney Cougars still came up short 98-84 against Maigh Cuilinn in Sportlann Naomh Ann on Saturday evening.

Aitor Munoz put up 20 points and 13 rebounds for the hosts, while Ivan Basic weighed in with a further 16 points and 12 assists to help see Maigh Cuilinn make it two from three.

Moy Tolka Rovers registered their first loss and Ulster University their first win of the campaign as the latter ran out 79-71 winners in Tolka Rovers Sports Complex.

A big first quarter, in which they outscored their hosts by 16 points, proved crucial to Ulster’s success as did the 24 points and 13 rebounds that Curtis Larousse served up on the night to match the 26 that Mike Wallace amassed for the Dubliners.

The wait for a first win in Men’s Division One continues for Joels Dublin Lions after they suffered a 73-61 reversal at the hands of Team NorthWest in Coláiste Bríde.

In a game that saw both sides deadlocked at 31 points apiece at the break, it was the visitors who gained the initiative in the second half, as Tyler Mutemasango and Alberto Rodriguez combined for 45 points and 19 rebounds, while Aidan Igiehon and Aran Lee netted a 39-point total for Lions.

In Friday night’s Division One fixture, Limerick Sport Eagles battled back from seven points down early in the third quarter to dig out an 87-82 victory over Tipp Talons in UL Arena.

Miles O’Donnell served up a game-high 27 points, while Sammy Bah and Niall Walsh combined for a further 29, but even that was not enough to see Talons get off the mark in Division One.

Alexander Carlisle spearheaded Limerick’s revival with a 24-point haul, while Sean Morrissey and Ignacio Folgueiras each chipped in with 14, the latter also serving up 10 rebounds and five assists.
