ND Audit Portlaoise Panthers went 3-0 this weekend with a win over Carrick Cruisers. Meanwhile, Moy Tolka Rovers also made it three for three with a win over Maigh Cuilinn in Domino’s Men’s Division One.
Kicking things off with Domino's Men's Division One, we started the weekend with a huge 48-point victory for Dublin Lions as they defeated Killarney Cougars 108-60. Russell Marr had a fantastic 35-point performance on an efficient 14-23 in shooting. Lions never went behind in a game where they had two 30-point quarters. The win sees Dublin Lions in second place at 2-1 for the season. Meanwhile, Killarney are dealt their second loss of the season after a 35-point win over Team Northwest last week.
Moving on now to a much closer game next as Ulster University defeated Titans BC 94-92 in a game that was decided in the final minute. Ulster’s Prince Ebwea put on an offensive masterclass with 41 points including the game-winning free throws to get Ulster win number two.
Titans will feel they did more than enough to get something from the game themselves with the lead changing hands 14 times. Umar Rachid was doing everything he could for Titans, dropping 36 points and 18 rebounds for the Galway side. The only player with more boards in the game was Titans’ Jack Spellman who had a massive 27. The loss means Titans lose their undefeated status and go to 2-1 for the season.
Drogheda Wolves picked up their second victory as they took down Maree 62-50 on Saturday evening. Maree led once in the first and once in the fourth quarter, but Drogheda were dominant in every other moment of the game. Four Drogheda players managed to finish with at least ten points including 19 from David Chukwubuikem Oputa. Oputa managed to also get 13 rebounds as the Wolves managed to finish the weekend in the top half of Division One.
Elsewhere, Maigh Cuilinn were handed their first Domino's Men's Division One loss of the season as they were beaten 80-73 by Moy Tolka Rovers at Kingfisher. Tolka’s Daniel Ayoade dropped 21 points on 8-14 shooting and was helped by a 15-point showing for Juwan Jones. The lead changed hands on 12 separate occasions but a 20-point fourth quarter for Tolka gave them their third win of the season, which sees them stay unbeaten through three games in Division One.
Limerick Sport Eagles got their season back on track with a 71-69 win against Templeogue in Tallaght. The trio of Ryan Leonard, Alex Carlisle and Tobias Christensen scored a combined 56 of Limericks 71 points to push them to a 2-1 start to the season. Leonard scored 20 points, Carlisle got 15 including the game-winning score, and Christiansen grabbed 21 along with 8 rebounds. As for Templeogue, Wilfried Omorusi scored 18 points and grabbed 10 boards in a game that worsens the Dublin side’s woes as they now fall to 0-3 for the season.
SPK Utility Trust Lakers got their maiden win of the season as they beat Malahide 81-75 behind two starring performances from Samuel Grant and Stephen Kelly. Kelly scored a game-high 28 points with 7 assists and Grant dominated with 20 points of his own plus a big 17 rebounds to hand Malahide their third defeat in just as many games. For Malahide, they led by a singular point at half-time but couldn’t keep up with Killarney’s offence with a nine-point swing in the third quarter which led to a win for the Kerry men to put up a notch in the win column for the first time this season.
The weekend concluded with ND Audit Portlaoise Panthers keeping their 100% record with a 20-point triumph over Carrick Cruisers. Rich Ashu put on one of the performances of the weekend with 32 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds and an outstanding efficiency of 50. Ashu dropped his 32 on 15-18 shooting from the field to help the Panthers outline their intentions to the rest of the chasing pack in Division One. As for Carrick Cruisers, they will be hoping to get to an even 2-2 start next weekend as they welcome Moy Tolka Rovers on Friday.
Switching lanes now we look at the Domino’s Women’s Division One. We opened the weekend with Limerick Sport Huskies opened their win account as they got to 1-2 with a 76-69 triumph over Cleveland Rockets in Lisburn. Clara Gomez and Shelby Harmeyer scored 18 each with Gomez also grabbing 21 boards and 10 assists to get the win in Lisburn. Rockets will look to get back to a positive record next Saturday when they host University of Galway Mystics.
Templeogue extended to a 3-0 record in Division One with free throws from Katie Behan and Ava McCleane inside the final minute giving them a 76-73 win over Abbey Seals Dublin Lions who themselves now drop to 0-3 at the foot of the table. Starring for Templeogue was the duo of Hanna h Murphy and Sofia Paska who combined for 34 of Templeogue’s 76 points. The shining light for the Lions was Makenzie Harris who scored 32 points on 12-19 shooting. The Lions continue to hunt for that elusive first win when they take on Clunetech Kilkenny Stars next weekend.
New to National League basketball, Dublin Raiders finally got their first win behind a 39-point performance from Mikayla Woods who also pulled in 13 boards for her stat line as the Raiders powered past Moy Tolka Rovers 69-62 to go to 1-2 in the Domino’s Women’s Division One table. Woods had 39 points in 37 minutes of play on 12-23 shooting as Dublin Raiders had a 26-point final quarter to ensure victory at home.
The other new appearing side in the Division in Clunetech Kilkenny Stars have risen to third in the table after making it back-to-back wins with Miah Ryan hitting a game-winning three with 12 seconds left on the clock to take home the win 71-68. Ryan had 14 points as she was Kilkenny’s second highest scorer in the game, only behind Stephanie Davis who had 20. As for Swords they now fall to 1-1 as they prepare to host the 1-2 Dublin Raiders next Saturday.
In the only Sunday fixture in the division this weekend, we saw Limerick Celtics surge past University of Galway Mystics to go 2-1 and also bring the mystics to 2-1 simultaneously. Sidney Richards and Sabhbh Edwards Murphy were leading scorers for Celtics with both women scoring 12. Katie Black also made an impact with 19 rebounds and a game-high efficiency of 19. For Mystics, two nine-point quarters in the first half let Celtics take a commanding lead into the half that they could not recover from. Both sides will be looking to go 3-1 next weekend with Galway travelling to Cleveland Rockets and Limerick Celtics hosting Templeogue in their first home outing of the season.
