Killester look to maintain perfect start to Domino’s Women’s Super League season

Unbeaten Killester (5-0) will travel to local rivals Trinity Meteors on Saturday evening looking make it six from six in the Domino’s Women’s Super League.

Killester have had a dominant start to the season, with three of their five consecutive wins being by at least 17 points or more. They travel to a 4-1 Trinity team that has been in almost equally-impressive form, led by Irish international Hazel Finn. Finn is coming off a fine international break where she was the team’s second highest scorer over the three-game window, including a team-high 16 points in Ireland’s win over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Killester head coach, Mark Grennell, said: “It’s awkward as we’ve had two weeks with no games and it’s tough to gauge how we will come out. Meteors have a nice balance to their team. They keep teams to low points totals and obviously have top end Irish talent along with two good Americans. We’ve a long way to go in terms of our growth as a team and where we believe we can get to, but we are working hard at it each week. It should be a very good game of basketball.”

Trinity Meteors head coach, Seamas Donnelly, added: “We wish to challenge ourselves against the best and Killester have elite players and are an elite team - we are a young team looking for incremental gains after each game - Killester represents a great challenge to see how far we have come as a team.”

FloMAX Liffey Celtics finally managed to get their maiden win of the season just before the break with a one-point win over Gurranabraher Credit Union Brunell. They will be looking to build on the momentum of that first win when they play Utility Trust St. Paul’s Killarney on Saturday. In contrast to Liffey, St. Paul’s are coming off their first loss of the season against Trinity, but they still sit in third spot. Liffey will be hoping they can build on that first win, as they prepare to begin their defence of the National Cup in two week’s time.

A team still searching for that elusive first win is Catalyst Fr. Mathews. Their latest attempt will see them in a Cork derby, as they take on UCC Glanmire on Saturday. Domino’s Women’s Super League points-per-game leader Laila Blair will be hoping to lead Fr. Mathews to their first win and start to rebuild some confidence in the Cork side, as they approach the midway stage of the season.

The Hickey sisters, Kate and Sarah, return from international duty to the SETU Waterford Wildcats, as they try and push their side into title contention with a game against a McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles, who have two wins in their last three games after a tough start to life in the Super League. A win for Cavan would bring them level with Wildcats and start their own playoff push.

Midlands Park Portlaoise Panthers host Gurranabraher Credit Union Brunell. A win for Brunell (3-2) would putting them in contention with the rest of the chasing pack at the top of the table, while a win for Portlaoise (1-4) would keep them away from the foot of the table.
