Preview: Killester stars Haiby and Bagdanaviciene set to return for SETU Waterford Wildcats clash in Domino’s Women’s Super League

There is quite a lot left to play for in the Domino’s Women’s Super League as the final round of regular season games before the playoffs comes this weekend. The battle at the top and for the top-four are both still to be decided before the season concludes.

Killester welcome SETU Waterford Wildcats with Killester looking to secure top spot in the table over Killarney, who are currently joint-top. Gurranabraher Credit Union Brunell will be looking to hold onto the final home playoff spot ahead of Wildcats when they face Killarney on Sunday, UCC Glanmire will be hoping to break into the top-two when they take on McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles, Trinity Meteors are aiming for a fifth place finish when they host Portlaoise Panthers and FloMAX Liffey Celtics face relegated Catalyst Fr. Mathews hoping to leapfrog Meteors in the table.

Killester share the top spot of the table with Utility Trust St. Pauls Killarney, with Killester holding the head to head advantage. Killester will hope to bridge a gap over Killarney this weekend when they welcome SETU Waterford Wildcats to the IWA this Saturday. According to head coach Mark Grennell, Killester are expecting some important names back this weekend in the shape of Samantha Haiby and Ieva Bagdanaviciene.

Speaking on Wildcats and Killester, Grennell said “Wildcats are the in-form team in the league, they look to be peaking at the right time. We are probably a little off where we want to be but we might have Sam and Ieva back this weekend, which will help us as we try find rhythm going into the playoffs. It should be a fantastic game”.

SETU Waterford Wildcats have managed to pick up four victories on the bounce on their way to contending for fourth position. They are currently joint-fourth, however Brunell hold the head to head advantage over them after winning both fixtures this season. Irish international Sarah Hickey will be hoping to keep her strong level of performances going, finishing with less than 20 points in just one game all season.

Gurranabraher Credit Union Brunell will look to secure a top-four finish when they host Utility Trust St. Pauls Killarney, who are looking to secure their own place in the top two for a home quarter and semi-final in the playoffs. Brunell welcomed back a familiar face last weekend in Kyaja Williams, who spent the 2023/24 season with them. Williams scored 21 points on her return in an 86-81 loss to Trinity Meteors.

Killarney lost control at the summit of the table last weekend after a 25-point defeat to UCC Glanmire. This weekend, Killarney will aim to ensure a finish in either second or first place to keep home court for their playoff run with a win over Brunell. Killarney could fall out of the top two depending on how results go for Killester and Glanmire this weekend.

UCC Glanmire done the double on Killarney this season after last weekend’s victory, meaning they are primed to take advantage of any slip-up from either side in first or second after picking up their third win against the top-two this season. Glanmire head to face McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles this weekend and head coach Mark Scannell feels his side is peaking at the right time.

On Glanmire’s performances, Scannell said “ The players have been fantastic, their work ethic and commitment has been fantastic. Some of the sacrifices these players make to play and practice is under appreciated. Through all of the ups and downs, we have got some consistency into our play at the right time of the season”,

Scannell added “ Our defence is improving and we know we can score the ball, so hopefully we go to Cavan and continue to improve and see where we finish up and then we prepare for the playoffs”.

For Eagles, their place in the table is set in stone as they own the final playoff spot in eighth, a big accomplishment for the promoted side this season. They will be looking to pick up some momentum before the playoffs begin after losing their previous three games. All that is left to find out for John Stephens side is to find out who they will take on in the quarter-finals.

Trinity Meteors managed to keep their hopes alive of a fifth-place finish with a five-point win over Brunell last weekend, giving them the head to head advantage should both sides finish on the same number of wins. Meteors welcome Midlands Park Portlaoise Panthers this weekend hoping to get a tenth win of the season.

Panthers are officially safe in the Domino’s Women’s Super League after Catalyst Fr. Mathews relegation was confirmed last weekend. Panthers will look to prevent Meteors chances of a higher finish and aim to finish their season on somewhat of a high this weekend by adding one more win to the record for the season.

Should Meteors suffer a defeat, FloMAX Liffey Celtics could potentially overtake them for sixth position in the table should Celtics secure victory this weekend when they welcome Catalyst Fr. Mathews to Leixlip. Celtics have enjoyed back to back wins over Eagles and Panthers, so they will hope to carry the confidence and momentum into the playoffs by ending the season with a third win of the season.

Catalyst Fr. Mathews exit from the Domino’s Women’s Super League has already been confirmed, they will be aiming to prevent a winless season by picking up a triumph in the final game of the season with their record currently standing at 0-17. Laila Blair will be hoping to add some personal success to her season by keeping her lead at the top of the points scored table, which she currently leads Glanmires Jewel Watkins by 20 points in.

All games in the final round of the 2025/26 Domino’s Women’s Super League regular season will be shown live and exclusive on BITV.
