Killester keep pressure on at the top with win over McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles in Domino’s Women’s Super League

There was three games on display in the Domino’s Women’s Super League on Saturday which saw Killester take top spot, at least of the time being, until Killarney take on Glanmire this Sunday. SETU Waterford Wildcats also made temporary moves up the table after a victory over Catalyst Fr. Mathews and FloMAX Liffey Celtics enjoyed a 14-point victory over Midlands Park Portlaoise Panthers.

Killester picked up their 13th win of the season with a tight 74-69 victory over McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles. Eagles led for the majority of the third quarter, with a finish from Eagles’ Katie O’Sullivan giving them a 60-57 lead heading into the final quarter. A three from Leilani Turner gave Killester a 66-65 advantage midway through the fourth, this would give them the lead that would push them through to secure the win for Killester. Morgan Lenahan and Audrey Roden combined for 35 points along with Turner’s 14 as they went top of the table for the time being until Killarney play on Sunday.

Killester are now 13-4 for the season, having played one extra game over Utility Trust St. Pauls Killarney, who face UCC Glanmire on Sunday looking to return to the top of the table. The defeat for Eagles, sees them fall to 7-10 for the season as they remain in eighth. They could fall potentially further behind in the race for a higher playoff seeding depending on how Trinity Meteors fare against Brunell on Sunday.

SETU Waterford Wildcats defeated Catalyst Fr. Mathews 93-71, thanks to a 20-point, 12-rebound game from Irish international Sarah Hickey which officially confirmed Fr. Mathews relegation from the Domino’s Women’s Super League. Alyssa Frescas, Tiarra Brown and Kate Hickey all put in a major games for Wildcats with Frescas and Brown scoring 19 each along with Sarah’s sister Kate adding 15 points in the victory. After a 29-point first quarter, Wildcats didn’t surrender the lead they held in the first for the remainder of the game.

Wildcats have now moved into the top four, albeit temporarily as a victory for Brunell on Sunday would see them return to fifth. For Fr. Mathews, they are now 0-17 as the winless run for the season continues despite another 20-point performance for Laila Blair.

FloMAX Liffey Celtics secured a ninth win of the season with a 67-53 triumph over Midlands Park Portlaoise Panthers in St. Mary’s Hall on Saturday. The Celtics duo of Destinee Bursch and Aine O’Connor scored 37 points between the two of them in the win, whilst Panthers’ Jessica Fressle had a team-high 18 points in what was their 15th defeat of the season.

Celtics are now up to sixth at 9-8 for the season, with Trinity Meteors potentially moving back ahead, pending the result of their game on Sunday as they travel to Cork on Sunday to face Brunell. Panthers are 2-15 for the season, however they can no longer mathematically be relegated following Fr. Mathews loss this weekend.

UCC Glanmire hosting Killarney and Gurranabraher Credit Union Brunell welcoming Trinity Meteors are the fixtures on display in the Domino’s Women’s Super League this Sunday. Both games will be shown live and exclusive on BITV.
