Title challengers Drogheda Wolves and ND Audit Portlaoise Panthers falter in Domino’s Men’s Division One

Both Drogheda Wolves and ND Audit Portlaoise Panthers slipped up in their hunt for glory on Saturday in Domino’s Men’s Division One with respective losses to Limerick Sport Eagles and Moy Tolka Rovers.

An inspired 31-point performance from Alex Carlisle and Ryan Leonard’s second double-double of the season handed Limerick Sport Eagles an 84-75 victory. Drogheda had their own starring performances with Vernon Jackson having his sixth game of the season where he scores at least 25 points by adding another 27 today. David Oputa had a 12-point, 14-rebound double-double and Chima Obikwelu added another 12 for the Louth side. The win for Eagles moves them level with Drogheda at 6-3 for the season.

There is another side level with Eagles and Wolves after Moy Tolka Rovers handed league leaders ND Audit Portlaoise their second loss of the season at the buzzer in a 72-71 win for the Dublin side. Stephen Commins hit a shot with six seconds left on the clock to take the one point lead which preceded a Michael Wallace miss for Portlaoise as they fall to 7-2 on the season. Sean McManus led the way with 20 points for Tolka, supported by Daniel Ayoade and Gustas Pocevicius who had 13 and 12 points respectively. It was the Michael Wallace show for Panthers as he scored 29 on 11/18 shooting from the field including the unfortunate miss at the end of regulation.

Team Northwest suffered their eighth straight defeat in the Domino’s Men’s Division One with an 89-71 loss to Maigh Cuilinn in ATU Donegal on Saturday. Thomas DiRenzo had his fourth game of 30-plus points with his highest tally yet of 42 for Northwest. It was a team game on the Maigh Cuilinn side with five players in double-digits for points with Grant Olsson the standout, dropping 24 with nine rebounds. The win gives the Galway side their third of the campaign as they sit in 12th position, just one win off of the three teams above them.

Dublin Lions have leapfrogged Drogheda Wolves into second spot with a 79-73 triumph over Titans BC. Points leader Russell Marr continued his sensational form with another 30-point game for Lions, along with strong performances from a supporting cast of Aran Lee, who had 19, and Ignacio Folgueiras who had a 16-point, 13-rebound game. Umar Rachid had his own double-double for Titans with 24 points and 11 rebounds, but a strong 22-14 third quarter for Lions proved to be too much as they now go to 6-3 in second, level with the three sides below them.

Templeogue defeated Killarney Cougars 110-105 in of the games of the weekend as we saw Evan Cook score 37 points and grab 11 boards for Templeogue as they fought off an inspired Cougars behind a combined 63-point showing from the Killarney duo of Sean Conway and Simon Olanipekun. Conway also pulled in 16 boards along with Kenny Shimwa, who had 16 of his own points on the board too. The Cougars had a 31-point final quarter, but Templeogue had already built an unassailable lead in the first three periods as they led by 15 going into the fourth. The win moves Templeogue one spot behind Maigh Cuilinn at 3-5 but it also leaves Killarney at 1-7 for the season one place above the foot of the table.

Maree enjoyed a comfortable 26-point win over Ulster University behind a big 36-point game from Isaiah Taylor on 50% shooting from the field on an impressive 44 efficiency. Ulster did not manage to take the lead once in the game and they suffer their second loss of the season and fall to seventh in the Domino’s Men’s Division One table. The win moves Maree level with Ulster at 6-2 and puts them one place ahead at 6-2.

SPK Utility Trust Lakers gave Carrick Cruisers their fifth loss of the season with the star trio of Eoin Carroll, Samuel Grant and Stephen Kelly combining for 82 of the Lakers’ 102 points. Carrick will feel they left it all on the court with a final quarter where they scored 30, but Killarney managed to finish even strong with 35 of their own in the final ten minutes.

In the Domino’s Women’s Division One, league leaders didn’t fare well either with Templeogue falling off the summit with an 84-71 defeat to Limerick Sport Huskies. Shelby Harmeyer continued a strong start to her second Division One with 26 points accompanied by a double-double from Clara Gomez. Huskies managed to get in front after a strong first quarter from Templeogue and managed to create an 18-point lead in the fourth quarter as Huskies now stay level with fellow Treaty side Limerick Celtics in the top four of the table. For Templeogue, they slip to second after their third defeat of the season and their second in a row.

Cleveland Rockets moved to the top of the table after a 79-71 win over Abbey Seals Dublin Lions. Lions had five players in double digits but 23 points from Cleveland’s Caitlin Gloeckner and two 19-point showings from Aoibheann Donnelly and Charley McGrath powered the Belfast side through in Dublin. In a back and forth game with 13 lead changes, Rockets had a 20-12 third quarter to restore their lead and drove home the win winning the fourth by four points to send them to 5-1 for the season.

Moy Tolka Rovers have also entered the chasing pack for the Division One top spot with their third win of the season against Clunetech Kilkenny Stars putting them one win away from the top four. A 14-point, 10-rebound game from Naomi Farrington and 20 points from Dane Bertolina ensured Tolka left Kilkenny with an eight-point triumph against a Kilkenny side who struggled to get anything going in the second or third quarter, with a combined 26 points to Tolka’s 33. The loss for Kilkenny  sees them fall to sixth in the table at 3-2, but have a game in hand on all of the sides above them.

Limerick Celtics got their season back on track with a 67-61 win over Dublin Raiders on Saturday. Celtic’s two pro’s Sidney Richards and Katie Richards combined for 25 points and 12 rebounds together. Jordan Hehir’s side were dealt an early blow when Katie Black had to be helped off the court in the first quarter where she had five points in four minutes. After a strong first half that saw them go in at the break ahead by nine points, a nine-point third quarter threatened to derail the positive showing but Limerick showed strong resolve to bounce back in the final quarter and take home their fourth victory win of the season. The win has Celtics level with Limerick Sport Huskies, and just one win away from the league leaders Cleveland Rockets. For Raiders, double-doubles from Mikayla Woods and Dominique Mpesa shows strong promise for a new side in the division. They now sit one place behind fellow newcomers Clunetech Kilkenny Stars in seventh with a record of 2-4.

In the final game of the weekend in the Domino’s Women’s Division One, 37 points and 12 boards for Kayce Vaile was not enough as Swords Thunder fell to their fifth consecutive loss of the season with a 67-62 defeat to the University of Galway Mystics who are now even at 3-3 in sixth. Kara McCleane, Emma Glavin and Demetra Yennari combined for 40 as Mystics pick up their first win in four outings.
