Killester head coach Mark Grennell says he is looking to “maintain some momentum”, as the Domino’s Women’s Super League leaders gear up to face SETU Waterford Wildcats on Saturday. The two sides met in the Domino’s WSL National Cup two weeks ago, with Killester advancing 95-75.
SETU Waterford Wildcats are in form, having won three of their last four games. Despite the absence of Irish international Sarah Hickey, Wildcats have won their last two games by a combined 22 points. A victory on Saturday for Jillian Hayes’ team would be their sixth of the season and would put them potentially in the top three, pending other results.
Killester head coach Mark Grennell is wary of the danger Wildcats possess. “Obviously this weekend will be a little different for both teams than two weeks ago, in terms of what is at stake. But I am sure the quality of basketball will be as high as ever. Waterford have been excellent coping without Sarah (Hickey) these past couple of weeks, which is a testament to how talented their players are and how well they are coached. We will want to try and maintain some momentum now, in terms of our level of effort and performance. For us, our bench has really stepped up the past two games to give us a shot in the arm at the right time of the season.”, he said.
Second-placed Gurranabraher Credit Union Brunell will be hoping to close in on Killester, as they head to Kerry to take on a Utility Trust St. Paul’s Killarney, who seem to have hit a bump in the road with just one victory coming in their last four league games. Most recently, a heavy 34-point defeat to UCC Glanmire compounded the struggling form on both ends of the ball. Killarney have only scored higher than 55 in one of those four games, yet have conceded a combined 288 points in those fixtures. Meanwhile for Brunell, they have made a big push to reach the summit of the Domino’s Women’s Super League recently, with four victories in their previous five. Averaging 77 points per game in that period. With one side having a steam-rolling offence and the other having quite a leaky defence, both sides desperately need the victory this weekend, but for very different reasons.
Another among the chasing pack is UCC Glanmire, who take on McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles on Sunday afternoon. Glanmire have won four of their last five games in the league, behind the continued strong form from Viane Cumber, who is averaging just short of 21 points a game.
UCC Glanmire head coach Mark Scannell said: “We are on a good run with a tough game against Cavan, ahead of a busy week with Brunell on the other end. We expect a very difficult game, but we are working very hard trying to get ourselves in the mix for the playoffs, prepare for the next game, stay injury free and see where it takes us. We had a great crowd at our last game and hopefully same again Sunday.”
Their opponents in Cavan have endured a topsy-turvy start to life in the Domino’s Women’s Super League. After recovering from a slow start, they picked up two victories to reach 3-3, but then followed that up with two losses in their last two games against league-leading Killester and FloMAX Liffey Celtics. A win for Cavan this weekend would go a long way in keeping them away from a potential relegation battle.
FloMAX Liffey Celtics appear to have found their form at just the right time, winning their last three league and cup games, after just one victory in their previous five. They will be hoping to make it four wins in a row this weekend, as they travel to Cork to face Catalyst Fr. Mathews on Saturday. Fr. Mathews are still searching for that elusive first win of the season, as they currently sit at 0-8 for the season.
Trinity Meteors suffered their third loss of the season last weekend against Brunell, they travel down the M7 to take on Midlands Park Portlaoise Panthers, who are yet to win since their opening day victory against Catalyst Fr. Mathews back in October. Hazel Finn will be one that Portlaoise Panthers will want to contain, the Irish international is averaging nearly 20 points per game for her new club. Portlaoise’s offence hasn’t been a well-oiled machine, averaging a league-low 64 points a game and yet give up the second most points per game at just over 75 points. They will be hoping to put an end to this torrid run of form when Meteors come to St. Mary’s Hall on Saturday.
