Dublin Lions remain top of the Domino’s Men’s Division one after victory over Tipp Talons

Dublin Lions kept their spot at the summit of the Domino’s Men’s Division One with a 90-69 victory over Tipp Talons on Saturday. Russell Marr scored a team-high 22 for Lions, supported by strong showings from Aran Lee, who had 19, Kevin Anyanwu with 14 and Liam Osinuga with 12 points. Michael Pierre was the standout for Talons, scoring 28 points in the defeat.

Lions are now 16-4 for the season, one win ahead of Drogheda Wolves and Limerick Sport Eagles. For Talons, they are in 13th, with a record of 7-13, level with Templeogue in 12th.

SPK Utility Trust Lakers fell behind in the race at the top of the table, losing 85-79 to 12th-place Templeogue. Samuel Grant and Stephen Kelly combined for 49 of Templeogue’s 79 points. But it was Templeogue’s core four of Eduardo Castano, Michael Gormley, Jack Finn and Millan Lopez causing damage, with the four starters scoring 66 points. Templeogue were just one point ahead heading into the final quarter, but Castano scored 13 of his 19 points in the final quarter to ensure they picked up the victory.

Lakers are in fourth after suffering a sixth defeat of the season. They are now two games off of the top of the table, but sit just one win ahead of Carrick Cruisers, who will be looking to snatch the final home court playoff spot. Templeogue are 7-13 for the season, two wins off of Maigh Cuilinn in 11th.

Both Limerick Sport Eagles and Drogheda Wolves kept up with Dublin Lions at the top of the table. Wolves picked up their 15th victory of the season after defeating Maigh Cuilinn 90-65. Vernon Jackson scored 34 points along with Chima Obikwelu having his season-high of 19 points whilst also adding 13 boards for good measure. Limerick Sport Eagles stayed level with Wolves after a 87-60 triumph over Team Northwest on Saturday. Darragh Horkan and Tobias Christensen combined for 46 points after Northwest’s Thomas DiRienzo scored 38 points in what has been a prolific season for him.

Eagles and Wolves are tied for second, with Eagles holding the head to head advantage after a nine-point win earlier in the season. Maigh Cuilinn are 9-10 for the season, one win behind both ND Audit Portlaoise Panthers and Ulster University. However, they hold a game in hand over Ulster. Team Northwest remain winless for the season at 0-20.

Carrick Cruisers kept their hopes of a home playoff berth firmly alive after a 90-83 victory over Killarney Cougars. James Aboaba and Braxton Benham combined for 50 points. Despite being down by 19 points, Cougars had a 31-point fourth quarter to reduce the deficit to seven, but it was too little, too late as Cruisers picked up the win.

Cruisers are 13-7 in fifth place, one game back from the top four. Killarney Cougars are 3-16 and sit second from bottom, level with Malahide, who are in 14th place in the Domino’s Men’s Division One.

Maree secured a vital win in the fight for positions in the playoff places over Moy Tolka Rovers in a 93-86 victory. Derek Murphy had 30 points in 35 minutes for Tolka in the loss.

Maree hold the cards when it comes to competing for fourth spot. Sitting in sixth at 13-5 for the season, they have two games in hand on all of the sides above them. If those two games are turned into wins, they will be level with Eagles and Wolves, battling for second place. For Tolka, they fall to 11-9 for the season and sit in seventh.

Titans BC handed Malahide a 17th loss of the season after winning 89-80 in Malahide on Saturday evening. Umar Rachid continued a strong string of showings for Titans with 28 points and 10 rebounds in the win. It was fairly comprehensive for Titans, not falling behind for the duration of the game and building as much as a 25-point lead during the game.

In the Domino’s Women’s Division One, league leaders Cleveland Rockets survived a late scare to defeat Moy Tolka Rovers 72-69 thanks to late scores in the final minute from Charley McGrath. A tough stepback three from Dane Bertolina, who had 36 for Tolka, put them ahead at 69-68 with a minute left. But four free-throws from McGrath saw Rockets take home a three-point victory.

Thunder’s Kayce Vaile continued her stellar performances after a 39-point, 32 rebound game last weekend, with 31 points and 15 rebounds this weekend.

Templeogue picked up a late victory in O’Loughlin Gaels, with a 57-53 win over Clunetech Kilkenny Stars on Saturday. Stars drew level through two Kalyah Watson free-throws to bring the score to 53-53 with a minute left in the game. Free throws from Lauren Darcy and two more from Hannah Murphy after an unsportsmanlike foul gave Templeogue a four-point victory.
