The Address UCC Glanmire beat Team Garvey's St. Mary's 112-41

The Address UCC Glanmire signaled their intent for the new season with a comfortable 112-41 win over Team Garvey’s St. Mary’s at the Mardyke Arena in the MissQuote.ie Super League, as Irish domestic basketball returned for the first time in 19 months.

The home side led 28-13 at the end of the opening quarter and pulled away in the second. They held a 62-24 advantage by half-time, which left Team Garvey’s St. Mary’s with a difficult task.

New signing Gianna Smith top scored for the home side, the American guard notched up 29 points, while their other American, forward Taylor Claggert, also impressed with a 17-point haul.

Claire O’Sullivan, who rejoined the club from Maree, drained 18 points. Her Irish international teammate Aine McKenna chipped in with 17 points.

Le'jzea Davidson had 17 points for Team Garvey’s St Mary’s, point guard Lorraine Scanlon scored 12 points on the night.

Speaking afterwards, The Address UCC Glanmire head coach Mark Scannell said: “Look you saw how much it meant to the girls just to be back playing. We passed the ball well and everyone worked hard. Good start. But lots of work to do.”

Team Garvey’s St. Mary’s head coach Liam Culloty added: “It was a tough start for us obviously from a result point of view - we are new to this level and we will have to learn fast that mistakes will be punished. We will take it on the chin and look forward to getting back on our home floor next weekend.”
