Pinergy Schools Cup U16 B champions Crescent Comprehensive overcome St Louis CS Kiltimagh 53-47

Crescent Comprehensive are the U16 B Boys champions after defeating St. Louis Kiltimagh 53-47 in the Pinergy All-Ireland Schools Cup finals. Denis Mathews picked up the MVP after a fine performance, which included 15 points. Sean Morrissey top scored for Limerick school on 24 points, while Con Kirby had 6. For St. Louis Kiltimagh, their offence was led by Fionnan Burke (16), Oisin McNicholas (13) and Oisin Mulderrig (7) 

St. Louis Kiltimagh started brightly, a nice three from Burke put them 7-6 up with three and a half minutes gone. Max Bennett’s layup and a three-pointer made it 12-8 to the Mayo school two minutes later. Morrissey was starting to make inroads for Cresent Comprehensive, a good finish inside with 45 seconds to go in the first saw them trail 14-12, but they’d trail by four, 16-12, going into the second quarter. 

A Burke three pointer in the third minute of the second quarter established a 21-13 advantage for St. Louis and they appeared in control of proceedings at that stage. Back-to-back jump shots from Morrissey for Cresent College saw them trail 23-19 with a little over two minutes to go in the quarter. By half-time the margin was just two points, St. Louis leading 25-23. 

Three minutes into the third a Dennis Mathews layup brought it level at 30-30, he also drew a foul to give Cresent College the lead for the first time, 31-30. A Morrissey three put Cresent College 36-33 up midway through the quarter. Oisin McNicholls’ basket for St. Louis. in the final minute made it a three point game again, as they trailed 42-39, but another Morrissey three pointer with 40 seconds remaining and it was 45-39 to Cresent College at the end of the third. 

A Burke jump shot reduced the deficit to four points straight after the restart. A Matthews layup two minutes into the fourth quarter made it a six point game again, as Cresent College led 49-43. With 1’15” to go Matthews landed another basket to move Cresent College 53-47 ahead and that’s how it would finish, to give Tony Hehir’s team victory.
