Basketball Ireland extend condolences following death of Blue Demons BC founder

Everyone at Basketball Ireland wish to extend our deepest condolences to the Coughlan family on the passing of Mr. John Coughlan. A highly respected member of the basketball community and founding member of Blue Demons Basketball Club and member of the Cork County Basketball Board Hall of Fame, with 66-years of experience volunteering for the sport he loved. 

He embraced the game of basketball soon after its foundation and oversaw the development of the juvenile game in Cork with other pioneers of the juvenile game. He took the helm at the Cork Juvenile Board. John was a founder member of his beloved Blue Demons Basketball Club and was instrumental in developing it to what is today.

He brought international club basketball to Cork through the hosting of the Major Extra Size Tournament in 1973 to 1975. Mr. Coughlan has been honoured with a Cork Indoor Sports award and is an Honorary Life Member of Basketball Ireland and has been inducted into the Blue Demons Club Hall of Fame. Upon his retirement as chairperson of the Cork Juvenile Board he took up the position of President of the Cork County Basketball Board a position, he held for nigh on thirty years. Mr. Coughlan was inducted into the Cork County Basketball Board Hall of Fame in 2022. The board also hosts the highly prestigious John Coughlan U15 Boys Tournament every January. He was highly respected by all that came across him in his life in Basketball.
