Basketball Ireland launch Dream Programme to empower aspiring female referees

Basketball Ireland is proud to announce the launch of the Dream Programme, a new and innovative mentorship initiative designed to elevate and empower the next generation of female basketball referees across Ireland. This programme will provide 25 aspiring female referees with the opportunity to be mentored by five of the country’s most experienced and respected female referee mentors.

The Dream Programme is a significant step towards increasing female representation in sports officiating, particularly in basketball, where the need for diversity and inclusion is more important than ever. By focusing on mentorship, the programme aims to provide participants with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to excel in their officiating careers.

Programme Highlights:

  • 25 Female Referees: The Dream Programme will select 25 promising female referees from across the country, offering them the chance to learn and grow under the guidance of seasoned professionals.
  • 5 Female Referee Mentors: The programme will be led by five highly qualified female referee mentors, each bringing years of experience and a wealth of knowledge in the field of basketball officiating. These mentors have been carefully chosen for their expertise, leadership, and commitment to fostering the next generation of female referees.
  • Comprehensive Mentorship: Participants will engage in a structured mentorship programme that includes one-on-one coaching, workshops, game-day experience, and networking opportunities. The programme will cover all aspects of basketball officiating, from rules and regulations to the soft skills needed to manage games effectively and professionally.
  • Programme Duration: The Dream Programme will run from September 2024 to April 2025, offering participants an immersive experience over several months.
  • Long-Term Vision: The Dream Programme is part of Basketball Ireland's broader commitment to promoting gender equality and supporting the development of female talent at all levels of the sport. The programme not only aims to enhance the skills of individual referees but also to create a supportive community of female officials who can inspire others.

Speaking on the launch, Paul Dempsey, Referee Training and Performance Manager at Basketball Ireland, said: "The Dream Programme is a monumental step forward in our mission to support and encourage female participation in basketball officiating. We believe that by providing strong role models and mentorship, we can inspire a new wave of female referees who will contribute to the growth and success of basketball in Ireland."

The Dream Programme is now open for applications, with interested candidates encouraged to apply here. This initiative is open to female referees of all levels, from those just starting their officiating journey to those looking to refine their skills and advance their careers.
