Cleveland Rockets get cup final redemption with win against Limerick Sport Huskies in Domino’s Women’s Division One

Cleveland Rockets managed to get revenge against Limerick Sport Huskies after losing in the Domino’s WD1 National Cup final with a 66-58 win in Limerick Educate Together on Saturday. Caitlin Gloeckner and Charley McGrath combined for 38 points, with Gloeckner adding 16 rebounds, to put Rockets at the top of the table with a record of 9-2 and have a game in hand on everyone below them. For Huskies, the defeat sees them now level with both Limerick Celtics and Templeogue at 8-4, but they remain second due to having the advantage in point difference.

Limerick Celtics kept pace with Templeogue and Huskies with a 86-70 triumph over University of Galway Mystics. Irish U16 international Laura Buckley scored 14 of her game-high 18 points in the opening quarter, going 4-4 from three in the first quarter. Her sister Amy Buckley, along with Aoife Morrissey and American Sidney Richards, all finished in double digits for points. Celtics are now in third at 8-4, and travel to fourth-spot Templeogue next weekend. The loss for Mystics has them now occupying the final playoff spot in eighth with a record of 4-8.

Swords Thunder picked up a crucial victory with a 72-62 win over Clunetech Kilkenny Stars. Kayce Vaile continued her fine form with a huge 27 points and 27 rebounds in the win. Star’s newest acquisition Kalyah Watson opened her account with a 10-point game alongside 13 and 14-point games from Aimee O’Reilly and Caoimhe Timmons respectively. Thunder now rise to seventh above Mystics at 5-7. Stars are now 6-6 and sit below Moy Tolka Rovers in sixth after a third loss in four games.

Tolka enjoyed an 80-57 win over Dublin Raiders. Dane Bertolina had a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Irish U18 international Naomi Farrington added 16 for Tolka in a game where they led by as much as 25 during the game. The loss for Raiders keeps them at the foot of the Domino’s Women’s Division one table at 2-10, one win behind Abbey Seals Dublin Lions. For Tolka, they are currently in fifth, just two games behind the 8-4 pack occupying the top four currently.

Templeogue managed to stay on course with the two Limerick teams with a 76-48 victory over Abbey Seals Dublin Lions. Former player of the month Sofia Paska had a 23-point, 12-rebound double-double game for Templeogue as they managed to build a 30-point lead in the game. The loss for Lions keeps them in ninth but in a precarious position, just one win away from the relegation zone but also one win away from the final playoff spot.

In the Domino’s Men’s Division One, the cup hangover also hit Limerick Sport Eagles as they suffered an 81-72 loss to Carrick Cruisers at UL Arena on Saturday. Four players for Carrick scored at least 15 points. Tyler Mutemasango scored 17, Braxton Benham had a game-high 20, James Aboaba got 16 and Andrew O’Connor had 15 along with 10 rebounds. The win has Carrick level with three other sides between sixth and ninth at 8-6. Eagles are now fourth with a record of 9-5 with Maree also on nine wins but have a game in hand on Eagles.

SPK Utility Trust Lakers managed to take third-place into their sole possession with a 10-4 record after an 87-83 win against current league leaders Dublin Lions. Stephen Kelly scored 31 points along with Eoin Carroll getting a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Lions are now 11-4 in first but the three sides below them, including Lakers, have a game in hand on Lions.

Drogheda Wolves secured a fifth consecutive league victory after defeating Tipp Talons 98-60 in Ballymakenny College. Vernon Jackson and Franiciszek Chmielecki scored 25 points each for Drogheda as they sit in second at 11-3. Talons fall to 12th spot with a record of 6-8 after the loss despite a 22-point game from Michael Pierre, one win behind Maigh Cuilinn in 11th.

Maree secured a 56-point triumph over Team Northwest in a 106-50. Isaiah Taylor put on one of the performances of the season with 57 points, shotting 22-29 from the field, including seven threes. Justin Wickham had a double-double to back up Taylor’s showing with Wickham scoring 19 and getting 13 boards. Maree are now level with Limerick Sport Eagles  on nine wins but possess a game in hand on Eagles.

Maigh Cuilinn moved up to 11th with a 76-59 win over Ulster University, who missed the opportunity to move into the top five. Grant Olsson had his sixth straight 20+ point game after scoring 24 against Ulster University. Darragh Ferguson scored 20 for Ulster in the loss. Ulster are now in ninth position at 8-6 alongside Carrick Cruisers, Titans and Moy Tolka Rovers.

Titans BC managed to join Moy Tolka Rovers at eight wins after beating Tolka 88-63 in Ballinfoyle. Umar Rachid and Joseph Coughlan combined for 45 points, with Rachid also adding 15 rebounds for Titans in the 25-point win. The defeat puts Tolka back into the lower playoff spots in sixth position with Titans now level with them in seventh with an 8-6 record.

Malahide secured their first win in four games with a 104-81 triumph over Killarney Cougars. Malahide’s trio of Stephen Safo, Romonn Nelson and Matthew Harper combined for 60 points, with Safo leading the way with 23 points and 14 rebounds. The win was Malahide’s third of the season and leaves them in 13th, level with Cougars, who are in 15th.

ND Audit Portlaoise Panthers picked up a vital win for their playoff hopes with an 84-79 victory over Templeogue. Amiri Stewart and Xabier Arriaga scored 51 of Panthers 84 points as they managed to hold off the comeback from Templeogue after building a 21-point lead in the game. Panthers now have a game in hand on the other sides on eight wins and could go level with Limerick Sport Eagles in fourth if they win the game in hand. For Templeogue, they currently sit in 14thlevel with Killarney Cougars in 15th at 3-11.
