Glanmire clinched a place against Liffey Celtics in the InsureMyHouse.ie Women’s Intermediate National Cup final following a convincing 59-40 Cork derby win over Cobh.
A second quarter shooting surge, culminating in a 13-2 run to close the half, allowed Nicky Bohane’s team to assert a stranglehold on the contest that they would never relinquish. Glanmire’s ability to score consistently despite Cobh’s energetic efforts on defence that won the day, on the back of a 21-point haul for Maura Dillion.
It was nip and tuck in the opening ten minutes, Dillon and Roisin Quirke found their rhythm early for Glanmire, before Ireland underage international Amy Duggan and Eimear Diggin replied for Cobh. A pair of free throws by Cobh’s Dara Diggin with two minutes left in the first reduced the deficit between the teams to a solitary point and it appeared as if either team would struggle to gain separation, that was until midway through the second quarter.
It was at this point that Glanmire’s Aimee O’Riordan drained a three-point shot that turned out to be the catalyst for the game winning run. Maura Dillion, Tasha Tully and Roisin Quirke all quickly followed up from inside the paint, leaving Cobh looking a little shellshocked. To their credit, following a timeout to regroup, they did just that. Anna Ring made a layup after a powerful drive and then they engineered an open look from three from a steal on the next inbounds. Cobh were unable to convert and this turned out to be their final chance to wrestle back some valuable momentum.
The second half was a clinic of shooting by Glanmire. Their lead peaked at 26-points, allowing three players, Dillon, Quirke and Ruth Patterson to reach double digits. Despite the growing margin, Cobh never threw in the towel and kept trying to execute on both ends. Amy Duggan led the way for them, amassing 16-points by the end of play, but ultimately when the final buzzer sounded it was Glanmire who were deserved derby winners, 59-40.
