Kilkenny get first win of the season over Limerick Sport Huskies

New to National League level basketball, CluneTech Kilkenny Stars have managed to get a notch in the win column with a 61-56 victory in Limerick over the Sport Huskies in the Domino’s Women’s Division One.

In a game where the lead changed hands seven times, Kilkenny were the side to finish stronger. Lead by 15 points and 11 rebounds from Stephanie Davis, Kilkenny took the lead late in the third quarter and did not go behind fo the remainder of the game. As for Limerick Sport Huskies, Shelby Harmeyer followed up her great showing against Limerick Celtics last week with 14 points and 15 rebounds yesterday. Clara Gomez had a game high 24 points, but it just wasn’t meant to be for the women in Blue.

Elsewhere in division one, Limerick Celtics made the journey up north to face Cleveland Rockets in Belfast and left with nothing as Rockets took home a comprehensive win in an 82-65 victory. Rockets led by as much as 20 points as a stellar 27-point performance by 17-year old Aoibheann Donnelly drove home the emphasis on a big win for women from Belfast in their opening game of the season. As for Celtics they take their first loss of the season after an opening win against Limerick Sport Huskies.

In a Dublin derby, it was Swords Thunder who edged out the win over Abbey Seals Dublin Lions in a 63-54 win in their opening game of the season. Lions led by as much as 13 in the third quarter. But a 19-point second half from Kayce Vaile drove the Thunder back into the game and eventually into the lead late in the fourth quarter.

University of Galway Mystics and Templeougue both maintained their perfect starts to the season with Galway beating Dublin Raiders in a comfortable 72-58 victory where they led by as much as 19 at one stage in the game. As for Templeogue, they ran out winners against Moy Tolka Rovers in a 26-point victory led by the performance of Sofia Paska, who had 22 points and 15 rebounds.

Mystics will be hoping to go 3-0 next week against Limerick Celtics and Templeogue host the 0-2 Abbey Seals Dublin Celtics next Saturday looking to also grab that third win of the season.

Over on the Men’s side of things in Division One, There was big wins for Ulster, Killarney and Portlaoise. Ulster University kicked off the weekend with a 91-70 win against SPK Utility Trust Lakers in UUJ. Prince Ebwea was the standout performer with a 31-point showing.

Portlaoise made the journey to Dublin to take on Malahide and ran out victors by 19-points in a 90-71 scoreline led by the duo of Rich Ashu and Michael Wallace who combined for 48 points. Ashu also contributed with 15 rebounds to go with his 26 points as the Panthers maintained their perfect start to the season.

Down in Killarney, the Cougars defeated Team Northwest by 36 points in a 79-44 scoreline to get their first win of the season. Jack Ryan had 20 points and 10 assists for Killarney in a game where they led by as much as 42 at one point in the game.

Maigh Cuilinn, Titans and Tolka Rovers all maintained an undefeated status this weekend with Maigh Cuilinn beating Carrick Cruisers 96-80 led by a powerful performance from Grant Olsson and Aitor Perez who combined for 53 points to give Maigh Cuilinn a 2-0 start to the season.

Titans BC took the victory against Drogheda Wolves in one of the closer games in the division this weekend as they won 89-84 in Drogheda. In a game with ten lead changes, a 30-point game from Umar Rachid was enough to get Titans over the line and go 2-0.

Moy Tolka Rovers travelled to Limerick and came home with another notch in the win column as they beat Limerick Sport Eagles 101-88 in UL Arena. A big team performance with four of the starting five finishing in double digits for points sent Tolka back home still unbeaten this season.

Templeogue are still searching for a win in Division One as they lost to Tipp Talons 87-82. Talons led by as much as 17 in the game. As the game went on, Templeogue slowly etched themselves back into it but it was just too little, too late as Tipp Talons managed to get their season up and running after a defeat to Limerick Sport Eagles last weekend.

And finally we finish off in Maree as they defeated Dublin Lions in a topsy-turvy affair with the lead changing 8 times. Dublin Lions had an 8-point lead at one point but as the game wore on, Maree really took control with Isaiah Taylor scoring 32 points and adding 9 rebounds too.

ND Audit Portlaoise Panthers, Maigh Cuilinn, Titans BC and Moy Tolka Rovers are the four teams remaining in Domino’s Men’s Division One that are undefeated and all four teams will be hoping to go 3-0 next weekend.
