Utility Trust St. Pauls Killarney keep pressure on at the top in Domino’s Women’s Super League

Utility Trust St. Paul's Killarney overcame Trinity Meteors, 65-55, to win their sixth consecutive game in the Domino’s Women’s Super League. Maisie Burnham continued her strong run of form with a double-double of 29 points and 11 rebounds for St. Paul's. The game featured 11 lead changes, including a Burnham finish inside to give St. Paul's a 48-47 lead late in the third quarter, a lead they would keep until the end.

The win for Killarney brings their season total to 11 as they compete for the top spot with Killester, who play on Sunday afternoon against Midlands Park Portlaoise Panthers. For Meteors, the loss is their sixth of the season, leaving them at 8-6. They sit in fourth, level with Brunell after both teams suffered defeats this weekend.

SETU Waterford Wildcats picked up a big win over third-place UCC Glanmire, with Wildcats running out 93-89 winners. The scoring for Wildcats created a good spread, with Alyssa Frescas scoring 26, Ireland’s Sarah Hickey with 20, Tiarra Brown adding 17 and then both Kate Hickey and Sanija Brikmane putting up 10.

Free-throws from Claire O’Sullivan put Glanmire ahead 86-85 with just over three minutes left on the clock, but back-to back threes from Sarah Hickey and Frescas gave Wildcats control until the end of the game. The win for Wildcats sees them sitting in seventh, level with both FloMAX Liffey Celtics and McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles. For Glanmire, they remain third after losses for both Trinity and Brunell on Saturday.

FloMAX Liffey Celtics got their season back on track with an 81-71 victory over Gurranabraher Credit Union Brunell. Brooke Kane had 23 points along with Katie Williamson’s 19. It was a convincing win for Celtics with the 9-7 lead they took in the first quarter, being the lead they took with them for the rest of the game until the very end of the game.

Despite the best efforts of Irish international Edel Thornton, who had 22, Brunell still suffered their sixth loss of the season. They are in fifth, still level with Trinity Meteors, who currently occupy the final home playoff spot. For Celtics, they remain level with McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles in joint-sixth on seven wins. They are now one win away from Brunell above them.

McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles picked up a vital 87-76 victory over Catalyst Fr. Mathews on Saturday in their search for the playoff spots. Niamh Tolan and Sophie Staunton combined for 57, with Staunton having 33, including nine three’s. Fr. Mathews started well, winning the first quarter by a score of 25-15, but an 18-point swing in the second put Eagles firmly in control for the remainder of the game.

Eagles are now even for the season at 7-7, sitting in sixth as the regular season begins to enter its final few weeks. For Fr. Mathews, it is a 14th straight loss, and leaves them at 0-14 for the season.

There is one game left this weekend in the Domino’s Women’s Super League, with Midlands Park Portlaoise Panthers hosting Killester, who are looking to stay level with Killarney at the top of the table. Panthers against Killester will be shown live on BITV.
