Three Irish teams selected for FIMBA European Championships

Three squads have been selected to represent Ireland at the upcoming FIMBA European Championships.

They'll take place from June 24th to July 3rd in Malaga, with Ireland sending one team to compete in the women's over 55 competition and two sides will enter the men's over 60 draw.

Speaking after the Women’s team selection Head Coach Debbie Flynn said:

”I am delighted to get the opportunity to coach the Women's over 55's  team in this year’s FIMBA European Championships in Malaga in June.

We have a talented and committed squad and they are looking forward to the challenge and competing against our European counterparts.

We are training hard, putting in the work and I have no doubt this group of players, with their commitment and hard work will make themselves and their country proud.”

Head Coach Deryck Payne has been impressed with the fitness levels of the 23 players chosen, but admits that the competition will be tough for the Irish teams:

“There are 16 teams in the division from some top basketball nations like Italy, Lithuania, Germany and Slovenia.

We will be giving away a lot of height and will have to rely on our quickness to compensate. There will be no easy games for either team.”
