Basketball Ireland CEO John Feehan has been elected to the Board of the Olympic Federation of Ireland (OFI) during an EGM on Thursday, December 5th. Feehan was one of 13 candidates for six non-executive director positions.
Speaking following his election to the Board, Basketball Ireland CEO John Feehan said: “It’s an honour for basketball to have a voice at the highest level of elite Irish sport and I am proud to be that representative as part of the Board of the Olympic Federation of Ireland.
“The Paris Olympics proved to be another huge success for our sport, as the wider sporting community witnessed the excitement, skill and speed of 3x3 basketball for the first time on a global stage,” Feehan continued. Through the introduction of Basketball Ireland’s 3x3 High Performance programme in 2023, we have created the pathway for Basketball Ireland to be represented at Los Angeles 2028. It’s a huge challenge for our players, coaches and volunteers, but I’m excited to see them meet it head on.
The entire country was immensely proud of the success of all our representatives at Paris 2024, I look forward to working with newly elected President of the OFI Lochlann Walsh, Vice-President Sarah O’Shea and my fellow Board members to ensure we build upon that success during the coming Olympic cycle.”
He is joined on the Board by Moira Ashton (Canoeing Ireland), Michelle Carpenter (Rowing Ireland), former Olympians Roddy Guiney (Gymnastics Ireland) and John Menton (Canoeing Ireland), along with Cecile Van Steenberge (Snowsports Association of Ireland). They will serve a four-year term up to 2029.
Lochlann Walsh was elected as the latest President of the OFI, while Sarah O’Shea was chosen as Vice-President during the Extraordinary General Meeting.
