Following their first defeat of the season last weekend, InsureMyVan.ie Super League table toppers, Tradehouse Central Ballincollig have found winning form once again. Having avenged the defeat to Garvey’s Tralee Warriors the following day, they made it two wins on the trot with an 88-53 victory over Moycullen BC.
The South Conference leaders were helped by Adrian O’Sullivan and Andre Nation, who contributed with 20 points each, followed closely by Milorad Sedlarevic (18). As for Moycullen BC, Grant Olsen starred with his tally of 19, while Kyle Cunningham shot 12 for the visitors.
Speaking after the game, Tradehouse Central Ballincollig coach Kieran O’Sullivan, praised the work ethic of his team. “Delighted with the performance, attitude and execution. Our high energy gave us the platform to keep a good pace all through. Moycullen battled as hard as they always do. We had fine performances from Adrian O’Sullivan, Padraig Lucey and Dylan Corkery. It was our last home league game, so great to see all the players get a chance to play in front of home fans.”
Garvey’s Tralee Warriors kept up the pace in second place of the South Conference, with a win against a hard-working NUIG Maree side. At the end of the first, the teams were level on 21 points apiece. However, the class of the Kerry side shone through to secure the win on a 93-79 score-line.
Ronalds Elksnis racked up 24 points for Garvey’s Tralee Warriors, buoyed by the tallies of Aaron Calixte (22) and Nikola Rosa (15). Deondre Jackson (25) was the stand-out performer for NUIG Maree. Lovre Tvrdic shot 13, followed by Jeryn Lucas on 10.
Speaking after the game, Garvey’s Tralee Warriors head coach John Dowling highlighted the importance of the crowd and its special attendees, in particular. “Delighted to be back playing in front of a packed complex, as excitement builds towards
the play-offs, we asked our players for consistency in our league play and we certainly showed that at times last night. A team built like Maree won’t let you have it your own way, they battled and made us work for it to the end. We certainly took some steps forward this week and will need to build on that for the next two weeks, before we travel to Killorglin.”
“I would also like to acknowledge the presence of Bruce Kelliher’s family, who were in attendance last night. Bruce played for both Tralee and Maree, so it was very special to have them there,” he said.
Leaders in the North Conference, DBS Éanna fell to a defeat against second-placed Belfast Star, who cut the gap between the sides to just three points. An 81-70 victory was enough for the Belfast side, who had a 10 point lead at the interval.
Shon Briggs (19), Max Cooper (18) and Conor Quinn (17) all starred for the Belfast Star side. DBS Éanna’s top scorers were Stefano Zecovic on 20, as well as Neil Lynch (14) and Romonn Nelson (9).
Belfast Star coach, Adrian Fulton had this to say after the game - “I’m pleased with the win. It was a very good team performance and once again the home support was terrific. We knew going into the game that we have three very difficult away fixtures to finish conference play, so it was crucial to secure the win. DBS Éanna are a very good side, so it is encouraging for us to manage to get over the line against them. It's great that there are so many teams capable of winning the title, as it makes for an exciting finish to the season.
Killester took home all the points against Bright DCU Saints, with a 98-73 victory, to keep them in the play-off hunt. Kason Harrel was MVP with an impressive 38 points, on top of John Behan’s 16 and the 11 from Tomas Fernandez.
“I’m happy with the win, we started really well and that put us in position to control the game. It was tricky playing the same team in quick succession, so it's good for us to head into the international break with a couple of wins.” - Killester head coach, Brian O’Malley.
Similarly, in the South Conference, C&S Neptune are coming into form, with a 107-77 victory over Team 360 Financial Killorglin. The game was a tight one initially but the 11 point gap at the interval never looked like it was going to be bridged, thanks to the work ethic of the Neptune side.
Cian Heaphy shot 20 for C&S Neptune, along with 16 for Roy Downey and 13 each for Alex Tarradellas and Miles Washington. Killorglin’s top scorers on Saturday were Isa Brandon (!3), Liam Croke (11) and Xabier Arriaga (!1).
Speaking after the game, C&S Neptune coach praised the collective effort. “It was a really nice performance from us. We had contributions from all 12 players and kept our urgency for 40 minutes. It’s been a good week for the club as we qualified for the play offs and had 2 players called up to the National team. Roy and Cian have been great leaders for us this season, so we are looking forward to seeing them make their debuts and bring that added intensity to our squad when they return from international duty.”
There was also InsureMyVan.ie Super League action on Thursday. UCD Marian got the better of Griffith College Templeogue on a 71-66 score-line. The winners were in a losing position at the interval but turned it round, thanks to 20 points from Jonathan Jean, on top of the efforts of Srdjan Stohanovic and Conor Meany (18). For Griffith College Templeogue, Vladimir Tokishin (14) top scored, followed by Jason Killeen (12) and Ciaran Roe (8).
Killester saw off the challenge of Bright DCU Saints, with an 88-67 score-line in Clontarf. Once again, Kason Harrell chalked up an impressive 38, while Tomas Fernandez got 21, to add to Ciaran Roe’s eight. As for DCU Saints, Benjamin Durox (17) headed the scoring, followed by Donal Monaghan (!3) and Eoin Darling (10).
As we drift towards the end of the InsureMyVan.ie Division 1, there was plenty of action over the weekend. On Friday, the team with the best record of them all (12-1) UCC Demons, once again gained the three points, this time against Limerick Sport Eagles on a 80-99 score-line. The damage was done in the first two quarters, as the Cork side led 33-58 at the break. Toby Christensen was impressive with 36 points, on top of David Lehane’s 15 and the 13 of Tala Fam Thiam.
The first half work of Drogheda Wolves saw Drogheda Wolves victorious over Ulster University, on a 71-67 score-line. The 12 point margin at the interval proved too big a bridge to gap. Steven Safo was the top scorer for Drogheda Wolves with 16, aided by Adam Mulally (11), Lucas Walford, Guilherme Vilela and Jubie Alade (all 10).
Visitors Grand Hotel Malahide convincingly saw off Titans on a 53-117 score-line at Ballinfoile Centre. Trevor Abecio (38) was the MVP, aided by the 19 point tally of Matthew Harper and Cian Daly’s 13. Anthony Ezeonu (18) was top scorer for Titans, followed by Joseph Coughlan (9) and Jackson Soper (7).

MVP Andre Wolford racked up 36, followed by the 22 of Rafael Martinez and Roger Sanahuja’s 17. As for WIT Vikings, their scorers were Craig O’Neill (26), Osi Oshiogweoh (13) and Daniel Sheehan (12).
Abbey Seals Dublin Lions narrowly beat table toppers EJ Sligo All-Stars 86-83 in a game that went right down to the wire. Jack Maguire’s 25 helped ASDL to victory, along with Finn Hughes’ 19 and Kevin Anyanwu’s 16 points. The sides were tied at 38-38 at the interval, before the Kerry side took control of the game, with Emilyan Grodov (25), Rui Saraiva (19) and Godwin Boahen (18) impressing. As for Portlaoise Panthers, Gary Morrissey led the charts with 19, followed closely by Kyle Burke (14) and Conor Gallagher (13).
