Club Governance Update

Basketball Ireland and the National Area Boards Committee (NABC) wish to inform clubs of an upcoming change in policy for the 2024/25 season. All registered Basketball Ireland clubs must have completed the Basketball Ireland Bronze Club Mark award before being registered for the 2025/26 season.

The Basketball Ireland Club Mark award was introduced in 2022 and has been a great success, with all participating clubs benefitting from the process. Twenty-seven clubs have achieved the Bronze Club Mark award to date. One of those is Clare Comets who were very happy with their experience:

“We would highly recommend clubs to get involved in the Club Mark award. It does take a lot of work and time, but is well worthwhile as in the end. Your club will be certain that you are providing the highest standards of basketball for all members.”

- Sharon Dooley, Clare Comets Committee Member

The Bronze Club Mark award ensures a club has the basic governance in place to run a basketball club and ensure a safe environment for players to learn and grow.  Grants and Participation Manager, Paul Carr, emphasised the importance of the Club Mark programme:

“Basketball Ireland is delighted to work with the NABC to implement this ruling for our clubs going forward. The Bronze Club Mark award is the basics that all clubs should have in place and Basketball Ireland wants to support clubs in ensuring they have the correct policies and procedures in place to protect their members. Basketball Ireland development officers will be on hand to work with Area Boards and clubs’ step by step through the process”.

- Paul Carr,  Basketball Ireland Grants and Participation Manager

University of Galway Mystics also achieved the Bronze Club Mark award:

“I would highly recommend the process as it promotes the best practice for clubs to take in order to develop on all levels (coaches, players, officials, and volunteers) all of which are required for basketball to grow.”

- Kyle Walsh, University of Galway Mystics Committee Member
